Predicting the potential distribution of major marine mammals in the Cosmonaut Sea

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
The Southern Ocean, a critical marine region on Earth, is undergoing significant environmental changes due to global climate change, including reductions in sea ice extent, ocean acidification, and alterations in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC ...

Diverse impacts of sea ice and ice shelf melting on phytoplankton communities in the Cosmonaut Sea, East Antarctica

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
Antarctic sea ice and glacier melt profoundly impacts marine ecosystems. Our study in the Cosmonaut Sea summer measures seawater oxygen isotopes, size-fractionated chlorophyll-a, and phytoplankton communities.

The Biogeographic Patterns of Two Typical Mesopelagic Fishes in the Cosmonaut Sea Through a Combination of Environmental DNA and a Trawl Survey

open access: yesFishes
Investigating biodiversity in remote and harsh environments, particularly in the Southern Ocean, remains costly and challenging through traditional sampling methods such as trawling.

Spatial heterogeneity and seasonal succession of phytoplankton community in the Cosmonaut Sea, East Antarctica: driving forces and implications

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Understanding the dynamics of the phytoplankton community in the marginal seas of the Southern Ocean is crucial for delineating its role in global carbon cycling.

Diversity mechanisms of long-term changes in phytoplankton biomass and productivity in the Southern Ocean: comparison in the Amundsen and Cosmonaut Seas

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
IntroductionGlobal warming and glacier melt are transforming Southern Ocean ecosystems, profoundly affecting phytoplankton dynamics. This study investigates long-term phytoplankton changes in the Amundsen and Cosmonaut Seas, focusing on responses to ...

Age and feeding habits of Caml grenadier Macrourus caml in Cosmonauts Sea

open access: yesFishes, 2022
Abstract Macrourus caml is a main by-catch in the Southern Ocean fishery, and a main prey species of Antarctic toothfish, which plays an important role in Southern Ocean ecosystem. In this study, age estimation and stomach content analysis were conducted by using samples collected from the Cosmonauts Sea in 2021.

Biodiversity of Demersal Fish Communities in the Cosmonaut Sea Revealed by DNA Barcoding Analyses [PDF]

open access: yesGenes (Basel)
The Cosmonaut Sea is one of the least accessed regions in the Southern Ocean, and our knowledge about the fish biodiversity in the region is sparse. In this study, we provided a description of demersal fish diversity in the Cosmonaut Sea by analysing cytochrome oxidase I (COI) barcodes of 98 fish samples that were hauled by trawling during the 37th and

Temperature structure and characteristics appearing on SSM/I images of the Cosmonaut Sea, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 1994
Water-temperature structure in the Cosmonaut Sea at 60 68° S, 35 65° E in 1987–92 shows that cold water with a temperature below -1.5°C was present in the coastal region. The Circumpolar Deep Water with a temperature higher than 1.0°C was found below about 150m depth from northeast to northwest of the cold water area.

On sea-ice advance and retreat in the Indian Ocean sector and off Lutzow-Holmbukta, Antarctica

open access: yesAntarctic Record, 2006
Characteristics of sea ice variations in the Indian Ocean sector and off Lutzow-Holmbukta, Antarctica, have been described with satellite data archived since the 1970s.

Comparison of Minimum Taxonomic Unit Division Pipelines in Metabarcoding Analysis of Antarctic Phytoplankton Communities [PDF]

open access: yesProgress in Fishery Sciences
The Southern Ocean plays a pivotal role in global carbon cycling and climate regulation. As a fundamental component of Antarctic ecosystems, phytoplankton provide the main nutritional support for Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana), a vital fishery ...
