Enhancing transporter activity in heterologous expression systems with SAHA: a 2500‐times more potent and odorless alternative to butyrate

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Heterologous expression of membrane transporters in cultured cells is essential for functional characterization, but is sometimes limited by low activity. Our study compares the HDAC inhibitors butyrate, VPA and SAHA to enhance transport activity. We propose to replace butyrate by SAHA: it is equally effective, devoid of repulsive odor, costs less, and

Cost-benefit analysis of aquaculture expansion in Arctic Norway

open access: yesAquaculture Economics & Management, 2019
According to governmental plans, Norway faces huge expansions in the production of farmed Atlantic salmon. However, it is municipalities that designate coastal areas to aquaculture activities and their motivation depends on net benefits at municipal ...

Co‐expression of HSV‐1 ICP34.5 enhances the expression of gene delivered by self‐amplifying RNA and mitigates its immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ICP34.5 is one of the most important antihost response proteins. The saRNA‐encoding HSV‐1 neurovirulence protein ICP34.5 clearly mediated the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha subunit (eIF2α) dephosphorylation and significant suppression of innate immune responses in vitro, leading to enhanced expression of the saRNA‐encoded gene.

The Comprehensiveness Dilemma of Cost-Benefit Analysis

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Transport and Infrastructure Research, 2013
Most project impacts on environment, climate, and health are not valued in markets or in choice situations similar to market transactions. Analysts have to go beyond revealed preferences to stated preference interviews and even to deliberative processes ...

Rational Competitive Analysis [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of IJCAI-2001, 2001
Much work in computer science has adopted competitive analysis as a tool for decision making under uncertainty. In this work we extend competitive analysis to the context of multi-agent systems. Unlike classical competitive analysis where the behavior of an agent's environment is taken to be arbitrary, we consider the case where an agent's environment ...

The ALARP Principle in the Cost-Benefit Analysis for the Acceptability of Investment Risk

open access: yesSustainability, 2018
The process of allocating financial resources is extremely complex—both because the selection of investments depends on multiple, and interrelated, variables, and constraints that limit the eligibility domain of the solutions, and because the feasibility

Type-based Dependency Analysis for JavaScript [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
Dependency analysis is a program analysis that determines potential data flow between program points. While it is not a security analysis per se, it is a viable basis for investigating data integrity, for ensuring confidentiality, and for guaranteeing sanitization. A noninterference property can be stated and proved for the dependency analysis. We have

Conceptual Design and Parametric Optimization of a New Multileveled Horsetail Structure for Bicycle Helmets

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
This study aims to explore the feasibility of using a structure inspired by the features of horsetail and human spine as the potential helmet liner, targeting at mitigation of acceleration‐induced injuries. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of individual geometrical variables in the design, indicating its capability to reduce ...

Moving beyond benefit–cost analysis of climate change

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2013
The conventional benefit–cost approach to understanding the climate problem has serious limitations. Fortunately, an alternative way of thinking about the problem has arisen in recent decades, based on analyzing the cost effectiveness of achieving a ...

Properties and applications of transversal operators [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
This paper presents some properties and applications of "transversal operators". Two transversal operators are presented: a "translation" operator T and a "dilation" operator D. Such operators are used in common analysis systems including Fourier series analysis, Fourier analysis, Gabor analysis, multiresolution analysis (MRA), and wavelet analysis ...
