Hierarchical Twist: Chirality Across Scales in Cellulose Cholesterics

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 14, Issue 4, 27 January 2026.
Hierarchical left‐ and right‐handed chiral nematic structures are observed in a solvent‐free thermotropic cellulose derivative. Free‐standing films show hierarchical twisted structures whose pitches respond differently to uniaxial strain: left‐handed pitches increase, ones decrease.

Audiological biomarkers of tinnitus in an older Portuguese population

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2022
Tinnitus is a phantom sound perceived in the absence of external acoustic stimulation. It is described in a variety of ways (e.g., buzzing, ringing, and roaring) and can be a single sound or a combination of different sounds.

New Alternatives to Milk From Pulses: Chickpea and Lupin Beverages With Improved Digestibility and Potential Bioactivities for Human Health

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2022
There is a strong demand for plant-based milk substitutes, often low in protein content (<1.5% w/v). Protein-rich pulse seeds and the right processing technologies make it possible to make relevant choices.

Exploring the Potential of Thiazolo[5,4‐c]Isoquinoline Derivatives as Dihydrofolate Reductase Inhibitors: Insights from Molecular Docking and Experimental Studies for Antibacterial Therapy

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 10, Issue 42, November 10, 2025.
A library of thiazolo[5,4‐c]isoquinoline (TzIQ) derivatives, including both neutral molecules and their corresponding cationic forms, was investigated. DHFR was predicted as potential target of those derivatives by a CADD approach. The most promising derivatives were predicted with molecular docking studies.

An integrative assessment to determine the genotoxic hazard of estuarine sediments: combining cell and whole-organism responses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The application of the Comet assay in environmental monitoring remains challenging in face of the complexity of environmental stressors, e.g., when dealing with estuarine sediments, that hampers the drawing of cause-effect relationships.

An interval prediction system for track irregularity after tamping based on multi‐module machine learning and pointwise scaling approach

open access: yesComputer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Volume 40, Issue 27, Page 4797-4823, 14 November 2025.
Abstract Predicting changes in track irregularity after tamping is important for assisting maintenance decisions and improving construction efficiency. To date, most prediction methods lack consideration for the uncertainties related to tamping effects.
