Evaluating synthetic substitutes to reduce illegal harvesting and support species recovery
Abstract Providing synthetic substitutes is a widely promoted strategy to shift consumer demand away from wildlife products derived from threatened species. Yet, there is little evidence on whether product substitution prevents illegal or unsustainable harvesting and contributes to the recovery of threatened populations.

Abstract The United Nations and European Union have set ambitious conservation goals to halt and reverse declines in biodiversity by protecting 30% of land and sea areas by 2030. Effective conservation planning requires evidence‐based spatial prioritization to maximize the coverage of species within designated protected areas.

Identifying hotspots of faunal data deficiency to direct urgent research and monitoring
Abstract Data deficiency is a substantial challenge for extinction risk assessments because incomplete data means we cannot accurately identify priority protected areas for conservation. Here, we use the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) distributions of amphibians, sharks and rays, fish, mammals, birds, and reptiles to identify ...

Subsistence hunting shapes the spatial variation of jaguar densities in community‐managed forests
Jaguars and people can coexist in community‐managed forests, but distance matters. In Guatemala's Maya Biosphere Reserve, jaguar numbers increased markedly in areas harder to reach on foot, yet jaguars were still found near communities, showing that responsibly managed forests can support jaguar populations while allowing people to maintain traditional

Hummingbird pollination is a hallmark of American plant diversity and has long been thought to evolve in tropical mountains due to declining bee activity. Using sister species of Costus specialized on bees (C. kuntzei) and hummingbirds (C. wilsonii), we show that this shift is not driven by reduced bee visitation with elevation, but by greater ...
