Cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome

We describe two boys with the cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCMS). Both patients presented with Pierre Robin anomaly and respiratory insufficiency and died 12 hours and 10 months after birth. The first boy had muscular hypotonia, severe micrognathia, glossoptosis, short palate, preauricular tag, paraumbilical fibroma, and a small and narrow thorax.

The cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome is characterized by cerebral maldevelopment or malfunction or both, costal deficiencies, and micrognathia. Cleft palate and glossoptosis are frequently present and contribute to the common presenting sign, neonatal respiratory distress. Intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation are common.

The goal of this study is to develop new biomechanical models representing the non-linear behavior of costo-vertebral and costo-transverse joints (CVCT). Three models of the CVCT joints were developed using different types of beams : 3D elastic beams; linear 3D plastic beams ; and multi-linear 3D plastic beams.
