Urban bats show dietary flexibility in aquatic arthropod consumption at urban and rural waterbodies

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Urban waterbodies are critical for biodiversity and provide feeding grounds for insectivorous bats. Yet, how urbanisation affects bats' food choices at urban waterbodies and the role of emergent aquatic arthropods remain poorly understood. We compared the diet of three urban bat species – Vespadelus vulturnus, Chalinolobus gouldii, and Myotis macropus –

A preventive strategy for the control of aphids in sweet pepper using lacewings and micrococcinelid beetles

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Aphids pose a serious risk to horticultural crops. Current biocontrol strategies often fail due to the poor establishment of natural enemies when aphids are scarce. We evaluated the potential of two aphidophagous predators, Micromus variegatus and Scymnus interruptus, to be used as preventive biocontrol agents, released before aphid infestation.

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Insects in cotton as affected by irrigation and fertilization practices

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1970
Cotton research personnel and growers have often observed that some insect pests are more abundant in parts of a cotton field or in, entire fields where plant growth is rank and succulent. The research reported here was initiated to test this observation.

Transcriptome analysis of Gossypium hirsutum cultivar Zhongzhimian No.2 uncovers the gene regulatory networks involved in defense against Verticillium dahliae

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
Background Cotton is globally important crop. Verticillium wilt (VW), caused by Verticillium dahliae, is the most destructive disease in cotton, reducing yield and fiber quality by over 50% of cotton acreage.

From the predator to the prey: a case study of the vulnerability of Harmonia axyridis to aggressive competitors

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
The level of aggressiveness of an individual is a factor that shapes intraguild predation (IGP) interactions. In Nabis americoferus, high aggressiveness leads to an increase in attack rate and IGP against Harmonia axyridis. Moreover, the absence of extraguild prey seems to exacerbate IGP. In docile N.

Emerging technological developments to address pest resistance in Bt cotton

open access: yesJournal of Cotton Research
Cotton plays a crucial role in shaping Indian economy and rural livelihoods. The cotton crop is prone to numerous insect pests, necessitating insecticidal application, which increases production costs.

Ant–aphid mutualism: the influence of Tapinoma ibericum (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) on Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphidae) control by commercial and spontaneous natural enemies

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
The mutualism between Tapinoma ibericum ants and Aphis gossypii disrupts the biological control exerted by Aphidius colemani in greenhouse peppers. Ant exclusion increased parasitism and the presence of most natural enemies, although Aphidoletes aphidimyza was more abundant with ants.

Dynamique des populations du puceron Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) sur le cotonnier en conditions de fertilisation minérale et rhizobacteriologique [PDF]

open access: yesTropicultura, 2016
Population dynamics of Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) in cotton under mineral and rhizobacteria fertilization conditions. The intensive use of chemical fertilizers might lead to soil degradation and promotes the proliferation of sucking ...

Reduced fertilization regimes could boost biocontrol service without reducing crop yield

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Fertilization level influences pest control effectiveness in tomato crops. High fertilization increases plant growth and aphid density but reduces the performance of the parasitoid Aphidius ervi. In contrast, the predator Adalia bipunctata maintains consistent aphid suppression regardless of fertilization regime.
