The stability of Couette-Taylor electrohydrodynamic flow
Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1989Abstract In the context of linear stability theory, an investigation is presented of the effect of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) interaction on the value of the critical Taylor number for loss of stability in a flow of a unipolarly charged fluid between rotating concentric cylinders in the presence of a radial electric field.

Vortex-Front Propagation in Rotating Couette-Taylor Flow
Physical Review Letters, 1983This Letter reports experimental measurements of the velocity $v$ of a Taylor vortex front propagating into an unstable Couette state in rotating Couette-Taylor flow and of the wavelength selected by this dynamical process. The data are consistent with a constant velocity $v\ensuremath{\propto}{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}^{\frac{1}{2}}$, as predicted from ...

Air bubbles in a Couette-Taylor flow
1999Summary: This paper presents some experimental and numerical results about the presence of air bubbles as tracers in a highly turbulent Couette-Taylor flow with a superimposed axial flow and a top free surface. It appears that the air bubbles stand near the inner rotating cylinder, at every alternate boundary, corresponding to the outflow streamlines.

Effects of ‘‘Kalliroscope’’ flow visualization particles on rotating Couette–Taylor flow
The Physics of Fluids, 1985Experimental results are presented which show that Taylor vortex flow in a vertically mounted rotating Couette system, visualized with a ‘‘Kalliroscope’’ suspension evolves to a spatially nonperiodic flow which is also nonperiodically time dependent. These effects are most noticeable in systems of large aspect ratio and depend on the concentration of ...

Dynamics near a tricritical point in Couette-Taylor flow
Physical Review Letters, 1989The time evolution of Couette-Taylor flow has been measured for supercritical, almost tricritical, and subcritical bifurcations. The subcritical transitions near the critical point are dramatically different from the supercritical transitions. A simple relaxational dynamics equation together with a slightly asymmetric sixth-order Landau potential has ...

Heat generation in a Couette-Taylor flow multicylinder system
Thermophysics and Aeromechanics, 2019The paper presents the results of an experimental study of energy production in the Couette-Taylor heat generator with independent rotation of cylinders: the system is applied to solving the problem of direct conversion of wind energy into thermal energy. The system consists of two nested multicylinder rotors.

Mass transfer in gas–liquid Couette–Taylor flow reactor
Chemical Engineering Science, 2001The results of the measurements of mass transfer coe$cients for the physical (CO /water) and chemical absorption (oxidation of benzaldehye) have been presented. The collected experimental data have been correlated with the energy dissipated in the system. High values of the mass transfer coe$cients, k a, of the order of 10 s have been obtained.

Quasiperiodic drift flow in the Couette-Taylor problem
1992The Couette-Taylor problem deals with the flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid between two coaxial rotating cylinders. Depending on the angular velocities of the cylinders, different flow patterns are observed in experiments. Mathematically, transitions between different flow patterns can be described by instabilities and bifurcations of certain ...

Wavenumber selection and Eckhaus instability in Couette-Taylor flow
Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, 1986Abstract We review a number of experimental results which pertain to pattern selection in Couette-Taylor flow. They include measurements of the harmonic contents of Taylor vortices, of the location of the Eckhaus boundary, of wavenumber selection by a spatial ramp of the Reynolds number, and of the axial variation of the wavenumber in the finite ...
