Mohr-Coulomb Failure Criterion Expressed in Terms of Stress Invariants

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1998
A polynomial expression for the Mohr-Coulomb criterion for failure of brittle or frictional materials in terms of stress invariants is derived. The form of the polynomial expression corresponds to the pyramidal shape of the failure surface in principal stress space. The pressure-sensitive character of the failure of a Mohr-Coulomb material is indicated

Fault interactions and Coulomb stress-triggering in complex fault networks

Earthquakes on normal faults cause negative Coulomb stress transfer (CST) onto receiver faults located across-strike, which, in theory, delays or prevents rupture. Nevertheless, earthquakes on such across-strike faults are frequently observed. This study explores why, and how, large earthquakes can be triggered on faults repeatedly receiving negative ...

Earthquake growth inhibited at higher Coulomb stress rate at Groningen.

Gas extraction from the Groningen gas field resulted in significant induced seismicity. We analyze the magnitude-frequency distribution of these earthquakes in space, time and in view of stress changes calculated based on gas production and reservoir properties.
