The Council of Jerusalem and the Council of Nicaea have been perceived as synods that definitively resolved clear questions, but such is not the case. Rather, the earliest renditions of both the apostolic and the first ecumenical council offer ambiguity at every turn, from why they were called to what was decided and how it was received.
