Optimal Energy Consumption and Response Capability Assessment for Hydraulic Servo Systems Containing Counterbalance Valves

Journal of Mechanical Design, 2023
Abstract Counterbalance valves (CBVs) are broadly applied in hydraulic manipulators, which is essential to ensure safe operation while moving a heavy load. They inevitably introduce additional energy consumption and poor dynamic performance.

An Energy-Efficient Method for Controlling Hydraulic Actuators Using Counterbalance Valves With Adjustable Pilot

Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control, 2021
Abstract Counterbalance valves (CBVs) are widely used in hydraulic machines handling gravitational loads. They are usually adopted in hydraulic circuits that set the flow to the actuator with either metering control strategies or primary control strategies.

An Experimental Study of Flow Induced Noise in Counterbalance Valves

4th International Symposium on Fluid-Structure Interactions, Aeroelasticity, Flow-Induced Vibration and Noise: Volume II, 1997
Abstract A counterbalance valve, when correctly applied to a hydraulic circuit, modulates the flow of oil when lowering a load, with a crane for example, to prevent an overrunning condition. Under some unique operating conditions, they produce a high frequency, monotone noise that can be characterized as a “squeal.” The objective of the ...

Energetic and dynamic impact of counterbalance valves in fluid power machines

Energy Conversion and Management, 2013
Abstract Counterbalance valves negatively affect the dynamical behavior of most of the hydraulic systems in which they are utilized, and they introduce additional energy consumption. Various valve architectures have been developed to address the dynamical issues related to the use of these components, and empirical guidelines are also available to ...

Influence of counterbalance valve parameters on stability of the crane lifting system

2010 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation, 2010
In this paper, a model of the large crane lifting system has been developed in the AMESim environment. The comparison between the simulation results and the experimental data shows good agreement in both time and frequency domains, indicating the correctness of the model.

Lumped Parameter Modeling of Counterbalance Valves Considering the Effect of Flow Forces

ASME/BATH 2019 Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control, 2019
Abstract The lumped parameter approach based on equations describing of the physical behavior of the system still represents one of the most convenient way to simulate hydraulic control systems. The key advantages of this approach are given by its intrinsic simulation swiftness as well as the ease of deriving state space formulations for

Numerical simulation and animation of oscillating turbulent flow in a counterbalance valve

IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. No.97CH6203), 1997
This paper reports the results of numerical simulation of oscillating flow in the complex flow passage of a hydraulic counterbalance valve. A counterbalance valve, when correctly applied to a hydraulic circuit, modulates the flow of oil when lowering a load, with a crane for example, to prevent an overrunning condition.

Simulation Analysis of the Counterbalance Valve Used in Cranes Based on AMESim Software

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012
This paper presents the structure and working principle of counterbalance valve used in some hydraulic cranes. Based on the AMESim software, the model of the counterbalance valve is build, and the simulation analysis for its performances is done. The simulation results show that the valve has a good dynamic response performance and stability, its ...

Stability Analysis of a Pilot Operated Counterbalance Valve for a Big Flow Rate

ASME/BATH 2014 Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control, 2014
Counterbalance valves are widely used in hydraulic deck machinery to balance the overrunning loads. However, as is well known, counterbalance circuit designed with poor choice of counterbalance valve tends to introduce instability to the system. This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a pilot operated counterbalance valve which can operate at a
