Cumulative effects, creeping enclosure, and the marine commons of New Jersey

open access: yesInternational Journal of the Commons, 2010
In response to declining fish stocks and increased societal concern, the marine 'commons' of New Jersey is no longer freely available to commercial and recreational fisheries.

A prototype framework for models of socio-hydrology: identification of key feedback loops and parameterisation approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
It is increasingly acknowledged that, in order to sustainably manage global freshwater resources, it is critical that we better understand the nature of human–hydrology interactions at the broader catchment system scale. Yet to date, a generic conceptual

Integrating sense of place into ecosystem restoration: a novel approach to achieve synergistic social-ecological impact

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2018
It is often a challenge to predict the impact of ecosystem restoration because many critical relationships and feedbacks between natural and human systems are poorly understood.

A coupled modeling framework for sustainable watershed management in transboundary river basins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
There is a growing recognition among water resource managers that sustainable watershed management needs to not only account for the diverse ways humans benefit from the environment, but also incorporate the impact of human actions on the natural system.

The Metacoupling Framework Informs Stream Salmonid Management and Governance

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2020
Stream salmonid fisheries are ecologically and socioeconomically important at local to global scales throughout the world. Although these fisheries are interacting systems of biota, habitats, and humans, systematic social-ecological integration across ...

Solvable non-Markovian dynamic network [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Non-Markovian processes are widespread in natural and human-made systems, yet explicit modeling and analysis of such systems is underdeveloped. We consider a non-Markovian dynamic network with random link activation and deletion (RLAD) and heavy-tailed ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Synthesis of human-nature feedbacks

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2015
In today’s globalized world, humans and nature are inextricably linked. The coupled human and natural systems (CHANS) framework provides a lens with which to understand such complex interactions.

An intracellular transporter mitigates the CO2‐induced decline in iron content in Arabidopsis shoots

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study identifies a gene encoding a transmembrane protein, MIC, which contributes to the reduction of shoot Fe content observed in plants under elevated CO2. MIC is a putative Fe transporter localized to the Golgi and endosomal compartments. Its post‐translational regulation in roots may represent a potential target for improving plant nutrition ...

Modelling the Minsky triad: A framework to perform reflexive MandS studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper, we propose a general framework to evaluate models of systems that are ill defined, incompletely known, and furthermore, which cannot be experimented in real conditions, such as the economical systems at the country scale, epidemics (for ...
