Cover Crop Planting Date Trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
When corn silage is harvested, the entire plant is removed, leaving the soil exposed throughout the winter. Many farmers have started planting cover crops following corn harvest because of increased soil health and fertility.

Tuning the Dielectric Properties of Individual Clay Nanosheets by Interlayer Composition: Toward Nano‐Electret Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The dielectric properties of clays are studied on the level of individual monolayers and functional double stacks. The material breakdown characteristics and charge storage performance are analyzed. For illustration, a defined charge pattern representing a cuneiform character is produced, written into a microscopic clay tile, referencing the origins of

Substrate Stress Relaxation Regulates Cell‐Mediated Assembly of Extracellular Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Silicone‐based viscoelastic substrates with tunable stress relaxation reveal how matrix mechanics regulates cellular mechanosensing and cell‐mediated matrix remodelling in the stiff regime. High stress relaxation promotes assembly of fibronectin fibril‐like structures, increased nuclear localization of YAP and formation of β1 integrin‐enriched ...

Microporous Microgel Assemblies Facilitating the Recruitment and Osteogenic Differentiation of Progenitor Cells for Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
There is a significant need for biomaterials with well‐defined stability and bioactivity to support tissue regeneration. In this study, we developed a tunable microgel platform that enables the decoupling of stiffness from porosity, thereby promoting bone regeneration.

Onto greener pastures with rotational grazing of cover crops: Lessons learned from four on‐farm case studies

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences & Environment
Cover crops are touted for improving soil health, reducing nutrient losses to ground and surface waters, and providing soil protection between cash‐crop growing seasons.

Cover Crop Productivity in Contrasting Growing Conditions and Influence on the Subsequent Crop [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In arable systems, cover crops provide multiple ecosystem services involved in soil protection and fertility. They can efficiently compete against weeds, control erosion or recycle nutrients.

Changes in the Soil Microbial Hydrolytic Activity and the Content of Organic Carbon and Total Nitrogen by Growing Spring Barley Undersown with Red Clover in Different Farming Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The experiments were carried out during 2012–2017. There were 5 crops in rotation: Red clover, winter wheat, pea, potato and barley undersown (us) with red clover.

A Vascular Microphysiological Model of Lung Fibrosis Reveals That Myofibroblasts and IPF Patient‐Derived Fibroblasts Impair Angiogenesis and Vasculogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A microphysiological lung fibrosis model recapitulates myofibroblast–vascular interactions. Induced myofibroblasts and patient‐derived IPF fibroblasts impair angiogenesis and increase vascular permeability via TGF‐β1–driven signaling. Pharmacological interventions with SB 431542 and VEGF supplementation restore vascular morphology and barrier function.

Soybean Cover Cropping Trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In 2016, the University of Vermont Extension Northwest Crops and Soils Team interseeded cover crops into soybean varieties to evaluate cover crop establishment and effect on soybean yield at Borderview Research Farm in Alburgh, VT.
