Construction of the Covert Channels
2003The purpose of this work is the demonstration of an adversary intrusion into protected computing system, when the covert channels are poorly taken into account. We consider an opportunity of overcoming the protection mechanisms placed between a protected segment of a local area network and a global network (for example, Internet).

A covert channel is a communication path that allows transferring information in a way that violates a system security policy. Because of their concealed nature, detecting and preventing covert channels are obligatory security practices. In this paper, we present an examination of network storage channels in the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).

Techniques for detecting covert channels are based on information flow models. This paper establishes a connection between Shannon's theory of communication and information flow models, such as the Goguen-Meseguer model, that view a reference monitor as a state-transition automaton.

Optimization of Covert Channel Identification
Third IEEE International Security in Storage Workshop (SISW'05), 2006We characterize the properties of covert channels and present a taxonomy of covert channels. Information flow sequence is adopted to represent information flows and covert channels. Covert channels are categorized according to their information flow characteristics.

An Analysis of Covert Timing Channels
Journal of Computer Security, 1992Covert channels have traditionally been categorized as either storage channels or timing channels [8, 9]. This paper questions this categorization, and discusses channels that cannot be clearly identified as either storage or timing channels, but have aspects of both.

This paper presents a new covert channel based on Google Analytic web cookies in HTTP protocol. The new covert channel is difficult to disrupt and is capable of reasonably high bandwidths. The Google Analytic framework is used by over half of the most popular web sites currently on the Internet; its ubiquitousness across the web implies a great impact ...

Secure and reliable covert channel
Proceedings of the 4th annual workshop on Cyber security and information intelligence research: developing strategies to meet the cyber security and information intelligence challenges ahead, 2008We describe the design, implementation and evaluation of a reliable and secure protocol to establish a covert channel that not only maintains a high degree of stealthiness, but also provides reliability despite temporary data loss as well as data confidentiality. An important feature of our proposed protocol is that it can be embedded in any legitimate

A covert channel can occur when an attacker finds and exploits a shared resource that is not designed to be a communication mechanism. A network covert channel operates by altering the timing of otherwise legitimate network traffic so that the arrival times of packets encode confidential data that an attacker wants to exfiltrate from a secure area from

One aspect of Public Key Cryptography often overlooked is that it contains a channel that can be exploited covertly. In this paper we will explore this channel as it relates to the RSA cryptosystem.
