Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Distinct modulation of microsaccades in motor planning and covert attention

open access: yesScientific Reports
The degree of overlap between the mechanisms underlying attention control and motor planning remains debated. In this study, we examined whether microsaccades—tiny gaze shifts occurring during fixation—are modulated differently by covert attention and ...

Uplink Rate Maximization for Pinching Antenna- Assisted Covert Backscatter Communication

open access: yes
The emerging pinching antenna (PA) technology enables flexible antenna positioning for creating line-of-sight (LoS) links, thus offering substantial potential to facilitate ambient signal-based backscatter communication (BSC). This paper investigates PA-assisted BSC for enhanced communication and covertness in the presence of a randomly distributed ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for

Cutaneous Melanoma Drives Metabolic Changes in the Aged Bone Marrow Immune Microenvironment

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increasingly affects older adults. Our study reveals that melanoma induces changes in iron and lipid levels in the bone marrow, impacting immune cell populations and increasing susceptibility to ferroptosis.

On Covert Rate in Full-Duplex D2D-Enabled Cellular Networks With Spectrum Sharing and Power Control

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing
This paper investigates the fundamental covert rate performance in a D2D-enabled cellular network consisting of a cellular user Alice, a base station BS, an active warden Willie, and a D2D pair with a transmitter Dt and a full-duplex receiver Dr. To conduct covert communication between Alice and BS, the full-duplex Dr transmits jamming signal to ...
