Why and how ontology matters: A cartography of neoliberalism(s) and neoliberalization(s)

open access: yesJournal for the Theory of Social Behaviour, Volume 53, Issue 2, Page 160-182, June 2023., 2023
Abstract In this article, I discuss the importance of ontology and its implications, demonstrated in the examples of different approaches to neoliberalism. The lack of careful ontological considerations leads to confusing and often contradictory usages of the term ‘neoliberalism’, obfuscating its usefulness.

A Review on Human Activity Recognition Using Vision-Based Method. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Healthc Eng, 2017
Human activity recognition (HAR) aims to recognize activities from a series of observations on the actions of subjects and the environmental conditions. The vision‐based HAR research is the basis of many applications including video surveillance, health care, and human‐computer interaction (HCI).

Learning body part‐based pose lexicons for semantic action recognition

open access: yesIET Computer Vision, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page 135-155, March 2023., 2023
Abstract Semantic action recognition aims to classify actions based on the associated semantics, which can be applied in video captioning and human‐machine interaction. In this paper the problem is addressed by jointly learning multiple pose lexicons based on multiple body parts. Specifically, multiple visual pose models are learnt, and one visual pose

Simulating Coxian phase‐type distributions for patient survival [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Transactions in Operational Research, 2009
AbstractCoxian phase‐type distributions are a special type of Markov model that can be used to represent survival times in terms of phases through which an individual may progress until they eventually leave the system completely. Previous research has considered the Coxian phase‐type distribution to be ideal in representing patient survival in ...

Mathematical model for forwarding packets in communication network

open access: yesIET Networks, Volume 11, Issue 2, Page 70-87, March 2022., 2022
Abstract The software‐defined networking (SDN) represents the future backbone of the Internet. In general, to understand the performance and the limitation of SDN is a prerequisite for deploying these networks and making the most of their resources. For achieving that goal, this paper discusses the difference between traditional networks and SDN over ...

Building mean field ODE models using the generalized linear chain trick & Markov chain theory

open access: yesJournal of Biological Dynamics, 2021
The well known linear chain trick (LCT) allows modellers to derive mean field ODEs that assume gamma (Erlang) distributed passage times, by transitioning individuals sequentially through a chain of sub-states.

Phase-Type Survival Trees to Model a Delayed Discharge and Its Effect in a Stroke Care Unit

open access: yesAlgorithms, 2022
The problem of hospital patients’ delayed discharge or ‘bed blocking’ has long been a challenge for healthcare managers and policymakers. It negatively affects the hospital performance metrics and has other severe consequences for the healthcare system ...

Steady‐state analysis of load balancing with Coxian‐2 distributed service times [PDF]

open access: yesNaval Research Logistics (NRL), 2021
AbstractThis paper studies load balancing for many‐server (N servers) systems. Each server has a buffer of size b − 1, and can have at most one job in service and b − 1 jobs in the buffer. The service time of a job follows the Coxian‐2 distribution. We focus on steady‐state performance of load balancing policies in the heavy traffic regime such that ...

A procedure for deriving new ODE models: Using the generalized linear chain trick to incorporate phase-type distributed delay and dwell time assumptions

open access: yesMathematics in Applied Sciences and Engineering, 2020
Ordinary differential equations models have a wide variety of applications in the fields of mathematics, statistics, and the sciences. Though they are widely used, these models are sometimes viewed as inflexible with respect to the incorporation of time ...

A Coxian model for channel holding time distribution for teletraffic mobility modeling [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Communications Letters, 2000
In this letter, we derive an algebraic set of equations that examines the relationships between the cell residence times and the handoff call's channel holding time. When the cell residence times have an Erlang or Hyper-Erlang distribution, the channel holding times can be represented by a Coxian model.
