Coxian distribution modeling for the generalized and unified teletraffic analysis of mobile cellular networks

2010 7th International Conference on Electrical Engineering Computing Science and Automatic Control, 2010
In this paper, the Coxian distribution model to characterize users' mobility (through cell dwell time) is proposed and its application for the teletraffic analysis of mobile cellular networks is presented. To the best authors' knowledge, Coxian distribution has not been previously considered in the literature to characterize users' mobility in cellular

Using Coxian Phase-Type Distributions to Identify Patient Characteristics for Duration of Stay in Hospital

Health Care Management Science, 2004
Coxian phase-type distributions are a special type of Markov model that describes duration until an event occurs in terms of a process consisting of a sequence of latent phases. This paper considers the use of Coxian phase-type distributions for modelling patient duration of stay for the elderly in hospital and investigates the potential for using the ...

On the Three-Moment Approximation of a General Distribution by a Coxian Distribution

Probability in the Engineering and Informational Sciences, 1988
The Coxian-2 distribution is a very useful distribution for queuing and reliability analysis. It is important to know when a general probability distribution can be approximated by a Coxian-2 distribution by fitting the first three moments. For a positive random variable with a squared coefficient of variation larger than 1, a lower bound on its third ...

On inferring the number of phases in a coxian phase-type distribution

Communications in Statistics. Stochastic Models, 1998
Summary: Coxian phase-type distributions of increasing order were fitted to simulated exponential data by maximum likelihood, and the distributions of the resulting likelihood ratio statistic considered. These distributions resembled mixed chi-squared distributions with mixing probabilities related to parameter redundancies apparent from the estimates ...

Estimating the costs for a group of geriatric patients using the Coxian phase‐type distribution

Statistics in Medicine, 2006
AbstractThe length of stay in hospital of geriatric patients may be modelled using the Coxian phase‐type distribution. This paper examines previous methods which have been used to model health‐care costs and presents a new methodology to estimate the costs for a cohort of patients for their duration of stay in hospital, assuming there are no further ...

The use of Coxian distribution in closed-form treatment of stochastic Petri nets

2007 Mediterranean Conference on Control & Automation, 2007
In this paper we propose a method for delay approximation in stochastic Petri nets. The method is based on utilization of Coxian distribution and least square fitting criteria. The problem is reduced to a direct parameters identification. Two examples illustrate the method application.

Model of Reliability of the Software with Coxian Distribution of Length of Intervals between the Moments of Detection of Errors

2010 IEEE 34th Annual Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2010
The generalized software reliability model on the basis of nonstationary Markovian system of service is proposed. Approximation by distribution of Cox allows investigating growth of software reliability for any kinds of distribution of time between the moments of detection of errors and exponential distributions of time of their correction.

Performance evaluation of cognitive radio systems with Coxian distributed channel holding time in the primary network

2011 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, 2011
In this paper, a general teletraffic analysis to evaluate the performance of cognitive radio networks with arbitrary order Coxian distributed channel holding time in the primary network is developed. The relevance of the considered Coxian model relies on its universality property, mathematical tractability, reduced dimensionality, and the fact that it ...

Channel holding time in mobile cellular networks with generalized Coxian distributed cell dwell time

21st Annual IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, 2010
In this paper, probability distributions of new and handoff call channel holding times in mobile cellular networks are derived under the assumption that cell dwell time has generalized Coxian distribution. It is shown that when cell dwell time has a generalized Coxian distribution, the resulting residual cell dwell time has generalized Coxian ...

On the waiting time distribution in a GI/G/1 queue with a Coxian–2 service time distribution

Statistica Neerlandica, 1989
The purpose of this paper is to derive in an alternative way the result that the complementary waiting–time distribution function in the Gl/G/I queue is the sum of two exponential functions when the service time has a Coxian–2 distribution. The idea is to interpret this type of service–time distribution as the sum of a stochastic number of ...
