Does salinity make a difference—Kidney anatomy of Saimaa (Pusa saimensis) and Baltic ringed seals (Pusa hispida botnica)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract As habitat salinity markedly differs between the endangered, freshwater‐dwelling Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa saimensis Nordquist, 1899) and the brackish water‐inhabiting Baltic ringed seal (Pusa hispida botnica Gmelin, 1788), we investigated whether this difference has resulted in morphological changes to their kidneys.

Three‐dimensional geometric morphometric analysis of diaphragmatic dome motion in COPD patients

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Diaphragmatic dysfunction is a hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), especially in emphysema, where hyperinflation alters diaphragm geometry and impairs inspiratory mechanics. However, quantitative three‐dimensional (3D) assessments of diaphragmatic dome shape and motion across COPD phenotypes are limited.

Hepatic morphology and serum biochemical profile according to dry and rainy seasons in Pygocentrus nattereri (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract This study investigated the physiological and morphological adaptations of the liver of the carnivorous fish Pygocentrus nattereri (piranha) in response to seasonal variations (dry and rainy seasons) in the Brazilian Pantanal. The objective was to describe how the liver, a central organ in metabolic regulation, responds to environmental ...

Microtopographoanatomical features of extramedullar cranio-vertebral tumors

open access: yesUkrainian Neurosurgical Journal, 2007
Micro-topographoanatomical features of extramedullar cranio-vertebral (CV) tumors were studied. The attention was paid to definition of extramedullar cranio-vertebral tumors micro-topographoanatomical variants. The necessity to account various ...

Previously undocumented regional variability in crab‐eating macaque skull sexual dimorphism and its implications for biological and morphometric studies

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract In a large sample of adult crab‐eating macaques, we quantified sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and covariance across the whole skull and among anatomical regions of the cranium and mandible. All regions showed significant mean sex differences, but the magnitude of size and shape dimorphism varied substantially.

Osteocondroma solitário intracraniano: relato de caso e revisão da literatura

open access: yesBrazilian Neurosurgery, 2012
Osteocondromas são neoplasias relativamente raras que podem comprometer o espaço intracraniano. Geralmente estão localizadas na base do crânio em decorrência de sua origem proveniente das sincondroses da base do crânio.

Quantitative muscle architecture in large carnivorous marsupials (Marsupialia: Dasyuridae) and links to substrate use and prey processing

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The Dasyurid species Sarcophilus harrisii, Dasyurus maculatus, and Dasyurus viverrinus, occupying diverse ecological niches and forming a guild structure in Tasmania, provide a basis for examining the roles of various forelimb muscle groups in prey capture and locomotion.

CRANIOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS IN MANED WOLVES Chrysocyon brachyurus ILLIGER, 1815 (CARNIVORA, CANIDAE)

open access: yesCiência Animal Brasileira, 2017
The aim of this study was to obtain craniometric measures in adult Chrysocyon brachyurus skulls, establish craniometric values for the species, and determine if the craniometric classification of domestic dogs is suitable for the maned wolf. Seven skulls
