The behavioral response of the crab-eating fox to olfactory enrichment

Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 2021
Abstract The effect of olfactory stimuli as a means of environmental enrichment is underexplored in canids. The crab-eating fox is the most abundant wild canid in zoos, but few studies have addressed the reaction of this species to olfactory cues. This study sought to investigate the reaction to olfactory stimuli in crab-eating fox with the aim of ...

VENTRICULAR SEPTAL DEFECT IN A CRAB-EATING FOX (CERDOCYON THOUS)

Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2016
Congenital heart diseases are not commonly diagnosed in wild animals. It is not surprising that few reports exist in the literature, so that prevalence of these anomalies is unknown in wild species. We report a case of a ventricular septal defect documented in a free-ranging crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous).

Visceral Leishmaniasis in a Captive Crab-Eating FoxCerdocyon thous

Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2011
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution. The crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) is considered a wild reservoir of many zoonotical diseases, particularly VL. This study reported the presence of Leishmania infantum amastigotes in different organs of one captive C. thous found dead in a zoo. This animal was positive by

Phylogeography and population history of the crab‐eating fox (Cerdocyon thous)

Molecular Ecology, 2007
AbstractThe crab‐eating fox is a medium‐sized Neotropical canid with generalist habits and a broad distribution in South America. We have investigated its genetic diversity, population structure and demographic history across most of its geographic range by analysing 512 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region, 615 bp of the ...

GONIOMETRIC MEASUREMENT OF JOINT ANGLES IN CRAB-EATING FOXES (CERDOCYON THOUS)

Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2018
This study aimed to assess joint angle values in the forelimbs and hind limbs of crab-eating foxes ( Cerdocyon thous) using a conventional manual goniometer. Nine captive crab-eating foxes, aged over 1 yr old, weighing from 5.9 to 7.5 kg were used.

Amelanotic melanoma in a crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous)

Clínica Veterinária
The accelerated and disordered division of cells in the body results in neoplastic processes. Melanoma, a malignant neoplasm, is described in domestic dogs, and it has already been reported in wild carnivores. During a routine examination of an adult crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), approximately 14 years old and kept at the Sorocaba Zoo, presented a

Non-invasive monitoring of the estrous cycle in captive crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous)

Theriogenology, 2012
In this study, four crab-eating fox females (Cerdocyon thous) maintained at the Federal University of Mato Grosso Zoo, Cuiabá, Brazil, were investigated for 16 mo, using transabdominal ultrasonography and measurement of estradiol and progesterone concentrations in blood plasma and feces. Blood collection and ultrasonography were performed once a month,

Radiographic measurements of the hindlimbs in crab‐eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous, Linnaeus, 1766)

Anatomia, Histologia, Embryologia, 2018
SummaryLife expectancy of crab‐eating foxes in captivity is approximately 11 years, which favours the development of diseases including orthopaedic disorders. However, to understand disorders that may affect these animals, it is worth determining a normal range of measurements.

Apparent Digestibility of the Diet Provided to Crab‐Eating Fox (Cerdocyon thous) Kept Under Human Care [Diet Provided to Crab‐Eating Fox]

Zoo Biology
ABSTRACTThe crab‐eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) is an omnivorous species with a frugivorous/insectivorous feeding habit and low feeding specificity, consuming a wide range of prey and vegetation. Studies that include its diet are based on the analysis of stomach and fecal content of free‐living animals, without focusing on nutrient intake.

Molecular characterization of Rabies Virus isolates from dogs and crab-eating foxes in Northeastern Brazil

Virus Research, 2009
Thirty-eight samples of Rabies Virus isolated from dogs and crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) in Northeastern Brazil were characterized genetically by analyzing the G gene and the psi region. The results show that there are two groups of Rabies Virus lineages circulating among domestic and wild animals in the region.
