TeV radiation from the Crab nebula and other matters [PDF]

open access: yes
The detection of the Crab Nebula via the Cherenkov imaging technique places TeV astronomy on a secure observational footing. The motivation for TeV observations, a discussion of the atmospheric Cherenkov technique, the experimental details of the Crab ...

Investigating the Anticorrelation between Photon Index and Flux of the Crab Using RXTE and NuSTAR

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a systematic study of the recently reported anticorrelation between X-ray flux and photon index (Γ) in the Crab Nebula, using archival Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) Proportional Counter Array (3–50 keV), RXTE High Energy X-ray Timing ...

Spatially Resolved Polarization Variation of the Crab Nebula

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We examined the spatially resolved polarization variations in the Crab Nebula over 2 yr, using observational data from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, and offer key insights into its magnetic field structures and evolution.

The prototype Schwarzschild Couder Telescope: A Medium-Sized Telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
The Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (SCT) is a dual-mirror telescope designed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) to observe very-high-energy gamma rays (20 GeV to 300 TeV).

Dynamics of the Crab Nebula [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1971
Studies of the proper motion of many filaments in the Crab Nebula show that the expansion centre does not coincide with the present position of the pulsar NP 0532. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed. Estimates of the turbulent velocity within the nebula indicate that it lies in the range 100 to 300 km sec-1.

The theory of pulsar winds and nebulae

open access: yes, 2007
We review current theoretical ideas on pulsar winds and their surrounding nebulae. Relativistic MHD models of the wind of the aligned rotator, and of the striped wind, together with models of magnetic dissipation are discussed.

X-Ray Polarization Detection of the Pulsar Wind Nebula in G21.5–0.9 with IXPE

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present the X-ray polarization observation of G21.5−0.9, a young Galactic supernova remnant (SNR), conducted with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) in 2023 October, with a total livetime of approximately 837 ks.

Abundances in the Crab Nebula

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1973
The bright visual-wavelength emission lines in spectra of filaments in the Crab Nebula cannot be used to derive unique values for the relative abundances of elements there, even under a simplifying assumption that heating is due entirely to photoionization by the Crab's nonthermal continuum. However, a range of possibilities may be estimated. By mass,

A Model of the Spectral Evolution of Pulsar Wind Nebulae

open access: yes, 2010
Recent observations suggest that many old pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are bright TeV gamma-ray sources without a strong X-ray counterpart. In this paper, we study the spectral evolution of PWNe taking into account the energy which was injected when they ...

Discovery of TeV gamma-ray emission from the pulsar wind nebula 3C 58 by MAGIC

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2016
The pulsar wind nebula (PWN) 3C 58 is one of the historical very-high-energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray source candidates. It has been compared to the Crab Nebula due to their morphological similarities.
