Dynamics of the Crab Nebula [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1971
Studies of the proper motion of many filaments in the Crab Nebula show that the expansion centre does not coincide with the present position of the pulsar NP 0532. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed. Estimates of the turbulent velocity within the nebula indicate that it lies in the range 100 to 300 km sec-1.

Pulsar‐Driven Jets in Supernovae, Gamma‐Ray Bursts, and the Universe

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
The bipolarity of Supernova 1987A can be understood through its very early light curve from the CTIO 0.4 m telescope and IUE FES and following speckle observations of the “Mystery Spot”. These indicate a beam/jet of light/particles, with initial collimation factors >104 and velocities >0.95 c, involving up to 10−5 M⊙ interacting with circumstellar ...

Analysis of Lateral Distribution of Atmospheric Cherenkov Light at High Mountain Altitude Towards Event Reconstruction

open access: yesInternational Scholarly Research Notices, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Air shower simulations with CORSIKA6.990 code using FLUKA 2011 and QGSJET II hadron generators are performed. The simulations are carried out at high mountain observation level, namely, Chacaltaya cosmic ray station. The lateral distribution of atmospheric Cherenkov light produced by various primary particles, namely, proton, helium, oxygen, and iron ...

Magnetic dissipation in the Crab nebula [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2012
Magnetic dissipation is frequently invoked as a way of powering the observed emission of relativistic flows in Gamma Ray Bursts and Active Galactic Nuclei. Pulsar Wind Nebulae provide closer to home cosmic laboratories which can be used to test the hypothesis.

Focusing X‐Ray Optics for Astronomy

open access: yesX-Ray Optics and Instrumentation, Volume 2010, Issue 1, 2010., 2010
Focusing X‐ray telescopes have been the most important factor in X‐ray astronomy’s ascent to equality with optical and radio astronomy. They are the prime tool for studying thermal emission from very high temperature regions, non‐thermal synchrotron radiation from very high energy particles in magnetic fields and inverse Compton scattering of lower ...

The Dark Matter Annihilation Signal from Dwarf Galaxies and Subhalos

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, Volume 2010, Issue 1, 2010., 2010
Dark Matter annihilation holds great potential for directly probing the clumpiness of the Galactic halo that is one of the key predictions of the Cold Dark Matter paradigm of hierarchical structure formation. Here we review the γ‐ray signal arising from dark matter annihilation in the centers of Galactic subhalos.

Observing with NIKA2Pol from the IRAM 30m telescope : Early results on the commissioning phase [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2020
The NIKA2 polarization channel at 260 GHz (1.15 mm) has been proposed primarily to observe galactic star-forming regions and probe the critical scales between 0.01-0.05 pc at which magnetic field lines may channel the matter of interstellar filaments ...

Comparison between the Emission Torus and the Measured Toroidal Magnetic Field for the Crab and Vela Nebulae

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Polarization measurements provide insight into the magnetic field, a critical aspect of the dynamics and emission properties around the compact object.
