Crack closure in Glare

open access: yes, 2005
The fatigue life of an aircraft is dependent on the loads of the aircraft service spectrum. Due to the variable nature of the load spectrum, fatigue crack growth is accelerated and decelerated by interaction effects.

Validation and Veri cation of the Acoustic Emission Technique for Structural Health Monitoring [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The performance of the Acoustic Emission (AE) technique was investigated to establish its reliability in detecting and locating fatigue crack damage as well as distinguishing between di erent AE sources in potential SHM applications.

Virtual Crack Closure Technique Based on Coupled FE/EFG Method

open access: yes工程科学与技术, 2011
:A virtual crack closure technique based on EFG method for thread-shape crack was introduced. The cracked component was discretized and the displacement field was determined using a coupled FE/EFG method, by which EFG nodes were arranged in the vicinity ...

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

A study of crack closure in fatigue

open access: yes, 1973
Crack closure phenomenon in fatigue was studied by using a Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The occurrence of crack closure was directly measured by an electrical-potential method, and indirectly by load-strain measurement.

Simulation of fatigue behaviour in fusion welded 2024-T351 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A model has been developed to predict short crack fatigue life in the fusion zone of Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welded 2024-T351, based on the observed propensity for complex, multiple cracking processes in this region.

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

Plasticity induced crack closure effect on fatigue crack growth

open access: yes, 2018
This study is focused on plasticity induced crack closure effect on fatigue crack propagation. It utilizes finite element method modeling to evaluate the effect of this phenomenon on crack propagation at a series of MT specimen configurations.
