Effect of Underloads on Plasticity-Induced Crack Closure: A Numerical Analysis

Journal of engineering materials and technology, 2019
The effect of underloads is mostly quantified by the averaged effect on the fatigue crack growth rate, and the transient behavior is rarely investigated.

The effect of overloads on threshold and crack closure

International Journal of Fatigue, 1985
Abstract The effect of tensile and compressive overloads on the threshold stress intensity level and crack closure behaviour of one aluminium alloy and three steels has been investigated. A few tensile overloads significantly decreased the crack propagation rate and increased the threshold stress intensity.

Analysis of effects of crack closure in shells

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1989
Abstract The effect of crack closure in a shell was studied using the finite element method. Elastic open cylindrical shells, containing through-wall-thickness stationary cracks under bending loads, were considered. Crack closure was modeled using the line closure model.

THE EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENT ON CRACK CLOSURE AND FATIGUE THRESHOLD*

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1983
Abstract— The threshold value for fatigue crack growth of a medium carbon steel was increased when the test‐environment was changed from air to an aggressive H2S‐containing brine. This increase in fatique threshold was shown to be caused by corrosion product‐induced crack closure.

Effect of periodic bands of overloads on crack closure

International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, 1989
Abstract Crack closure experiments were performed on 6061-T6 Al-alloy for various bands of overloads. These bands of overloads were applied after an interval of 10% CAL life from the beginning and after exhausting 50% CAL life. The sequence is almost constant amplitude loading with periodically inserted multiple overloads, which subsequently cause ...

On crack closure and the notch size effect in fatigue

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1987
Abstract A method for determining the fatigue notch-size-effect is presented based upon the development of closure in the wake of a newly formed crack growing from a notch. A comparison with experimental results is in accord with predictions. The effect of crack closure on the formation of non-propagating cracks at notches and on notch sensitivity is

The effect of pre-strain on fatigue crack growth and crack closure

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1976
Abstract A single pre-strain ( ϵ = 0.03 ) applied to 2024-T3 material raised the static yield strength from 428 to 480 MN/m 2 . The growth rate of a fatigue crack in the pre-strained material was about twice as large as in the material that was not pre-strained.

The Effects of Crack Closure on Ultrasonic Scattering Measurements

1984
The ultrasonic scattering from cracks is traditionally modelled by requiring that the stresses vanish on the crack faces. A violation of this assumption is found in real cracks when asperities on opposing faces are forced into contact by closure or applied stresses.
