Optical method for fatigue crack detection

Applied Optics, 1980
A 1-D optical Fourier spectrum analyzer system is used to detect fatigue cracks as small as 0.5 microm in titanium test samples. Signatures obtained from scans of reflected laser light diffraction patterns show features linked to the presence of surface cracks.

Crack detection using contact sensing

Proceedings of the 1994 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2002
In this paper, we describe a robotic system employing contact sensing to detect the presence of cracks in surfaces. Automated detection of cracks in surfaces has many practical applications. Tasks such as inspection of underground pipes carrying fluids and the inspection of ship hulls are examples of jobs that are difficult for human operators.

Magnetic Crack Detection

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1945
In Part I the elementary principles of magnetic crack detection have been discussed, and an endeavour made to explain the elements of a system which has been satisfactorily applied to the inspection of aeroengine components.

Small scatter elements for crack detection

2015 9th International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST), 2015
This paper looks at the feasibility of using short elements radar scatters elements within concrete as a marker to cracking. It is shown that the dynamic range of power returns due to broken scatterers (indicating cracks) is small, but nevertheless consistent putting such techniques near the limits of feasibility when taken in a statistical context.
