Deterministic models of crack growth can be fitted to experimental data. This paper shows that stochastic growth models are easy to use and provides a simple framework for data analysis. A simple transformation allows the standard linear regression model to be used and opens the way for a fully Bayesian analysis.

In the paper the equations of stable and unstable crack growth are reconsidered in the framework of thermodynamics. The new approach is proposed that is tested for the fast crack growth. The results obtained reflect qualitatively the main features of this process.

So far two types of crack extension have been considered: stable crack extension starting at K 1 =K 10 and unstable crack extension, if K 1=K 1inst is reached (or at K 1 =K 1c for a material with a flat crack growth resistance curve). A third type of crack extension is called subcritical crack extension.

Metal fatigue is a major cause for failure of mechanical and structural components. We review the fracture mechanics of fatigue and Paris-Erdogan law for the mean behavior. After a consideration of experimental data reported by Virkler et al. (1979), we propose a continuous semimarkov process to model crack growth.

Abstract : Test specimens of TI-6-2-4-2 were tested in an effort to determine the basic properties of the material. The main property investigated was the crack growth rate, da/dn, relative to the size of the crack, a, over the fatigue life of the specimen. Yield zones at crack tips were also investigated on tills material. Specimens of Beta2lS/SCS6, a
