A rate-dependent criterion for crack growth

International Journal of Fracture, 1979
The Griffith instability criterion for crack propagation is generalized to provide a criterion for time-dependent crack growth. Our procedure is similar to that of Griffith in its use of a global energy balance. The Griffith method is generalized by the inclusion of the rate-of-energy dissipation term in the balance law.

An investigation on fatigue crack growth rates through a designed nonsymmetric crack growth test

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2012
A nonsymmetric fatigue crack growth (FCG) test is specially designed and performed to study whether FCG test data from nonsymmetric cracking which is unavoidable in practice can be used to determine valid FCG rate information for fatigue life evaluation.

High strain-rate crack growth in rate-dependent plastic solids

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1985
Abstract At high crack velocities in metallic materials nearly all plastic strain accumulates at very high strain-rates, typically in the range 10 3 s −1 to 10 5 s −1 . At these rates, dislocation motion is limited by dynamic lattice effects and the plastic strain-rate increases approximately linearly with stress. The problem for a crack growing

Part-Through Crack Growth Predictions Using Compact Tension Crack Growth Rate Data

1979
The validity of using compact tension fatigue crack growth rate data to predict constant amplitude fatigue crack growth of part-through crack specimens was assessed. The assessment reported herein is one of six such assessments made by various members of the ASTM Task Group E24.06.01 on Application of Fracture Data in Life Prediction.

The Rate of Growth of Fatigue Cracks

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1936
Abstract The author discusses the resistance of metal to the propagation of cracks, and points out that in the accepted method of fatigue testing the results are not conclusive because there is no distinction between (1) the load and the number of repeated stresses required to start cracks and (2) the load and the number of reversals ...

Effects of Temperature on Crack Growth Rate in Sensitized Type 304 Stainless Steel and Alloy 600

Corrosion, 1992
The effects of temperature on stress corrosion crack growth rates were studied on three heats of sensitized type 304 stainless steel and one heat of sensitized Alloy 600.

Variation of crack opening-load diagram with fatigue crack growth rate

Materials Science and Engineering, 1977
Abstract This study is concerned with the fatigue threshold of the aluminium alloy AU2GN. By analysis of load-displacement curves, the authors have determined the crack closure load (Pop) and the elastic response of crack opening (Pel). Thus, it has been shown that at the fatigue threshold level, the crack is open elastically.

Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Recommended in BS7910 and an Unique Crack Growth Rate Curve Under Different Load Ratios

Volume 1: Codes and Standards, 2007
It is still difficult to select the proper constants of crack growth rate corresponding to the loading condition for R-ratio has significant effect on crack growth rate. An unique crack growth rate equation, taking equivalent stress intensity factor range (ESIFR) as the driving force, has been examined for steels and as welded joints.
