Nonlinear crack opening integral: Mode mixity for finite cracks

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2017
Abstract In this work the incremental energy release rate is analyzed for single-lap adhesive joints by means of the crack closure/opening integral. To this aim, geometrically nonlinear numerical analyses are performed. For nonlinear elastic analyses the relationship between nodal forces and displacements during nodal load reduction generally cannot ...

Fatigue crack propagation modes: plastic deformation mode and damage accumulation mode

International Journal of Fracture, 2020
To define the fatigue crack propagation mode for the prediction and classification of the experimental results based on its evolution mechanism, successive mesoscopic observations of a fatigue process under pure cyclic mode II loading are performed. Thus, damage accumulation, which is considered to be a vacancy accumulation, is found to be a mechanism.

Multiaxial mixed-mode cracking – small crack initiation and propagation*

Materials Testing, 2006
Abstract Both the fatigue crack path and fatigue life of CK45 steel and 42CrMo4 steel under various multiaxial loading paths are studied in this paper. The replica method was applied to monitor the crack initiation and small crack growth, the fractographic analyses were carried out on the fracture surface and the crack initiation angle ...

On fracture initiation toughness and crack sharpness for Mode II cracks

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2009
Abstract Fracture toughness of brittle materials is calibrated in experiments where a sample with a preexisting crack is loaded up to a critical point of the onset of static instability. Experiments with ceramics, for example, exhibit a pronounced dependence of the toughness on the sharpness of the crack/notch: the sharper is the crack the lower is ...

Mixed mode crack propagation

2002
Experimental results show that ductile crack extension occurs often under steady-state mixed mode conditions. Observations in experiments [118] confirm that material points undergo failure under mode I and mode III conditions, especially, for thin specimens the crack tip field is turned from pure mode I (normal stress failure) to combined mode I and ...

Mixed mode crack initiation and direction in beams with edge crack

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2000
The S-theory is applied to determine crack initiation and direction for beams with edge crack. A simple method for obtaining approximate stress intensity factors of straight cracked beams is also proposed. It takes into account the elastic crack tip stress singularity while using the elementary beam theory.

Mixed Mode Fatigue Crack Growth in a Center-Cracked Panel

2003
Evaluate the initial fatigue crack growth rate for a 20 mm centre crack in a thick wide plate. The crack is oriented at an angle of 45° to the direction of loading. The plate is subjected to a constant amplitude fatigue loading from 0 to 100 MPa. Material properties: E = 210 GPa, v = 0.25.

Mixed-mode crack growth in toughened PMMA

2004
Experimental results concerning mixed-mode crack growth in PMMA specimens are presented, together with numerical simulations of the whole fracture process. The mixed-mode tests were conducted on single edge notched specimens subject to three point bending loading conditions.
