Anisotropy in fracture and fatigue resistance of pearlitic steels and its effect on the crack path

International Journal of Fatigue, 2019
An essential ingredient in the methodology for lifetime estimation is the determination of the crack path. There are several parameters affecting the crack path: the crack driving force and its change with the direction of crack extension, the load ...

Crack path and life prediction under mixed mode cyclic variable amplitude loading through XFEM

International Journal of Fatigue, 2018
In the present paper, a mesh independent computational algorithm is developed and incorporated into a commercial finite element software (Abaqus) for automated fatigue crack growth analysis under mixed mode variable amplitude loading conditions.

Effect of primary α phase on the fatigue crack path of laser melting deposited Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–1Cr–1Fe near β titanium alloy

International Journal of Fatigue, 2018
The fatigue crack growth behaviour of laser melting deposited Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–1Cr–1Fe titanium alloy was investigated. Deflective crack paths were observed in compact tension C(T) specimens under constant amplitude loading, which greatly extended their ...

On crack path evolution rules

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2010
The models of crack growth in mixed mode conditions are reviewed for the plane and three-dimensional (3D) states of stress. Both critical load value and crack path or surface growth are predicted by different criteria in terms of elastic singular stress states and T-stress component. Monotonic and cyclic loading induced crack growth is considered.

Influence of finite element model, load-sharing and load distribution on crack propagation path in spur gear drive

, 2020
The tooth fracture is one of the main failure modes in spur gear drives which is due to the bending fatigue load acting on the spur gear tooth during power transmission.

On crack paths

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1987
Abstract Crack paths are discussed from several different points of view. The remarkable reproducibility of crack paths, especially the frequent occurrence of straight cracks, is considered. The general dominance of mode I growth at mixed mode loading (via kinking or tilting of the crack edge) is examined, and it is shown that mode I growth can be ...

The effect of crack path on tearing resistance of a narrow-gap Alloy 52 dissimilar metal weld

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2018
Fracture mechanical testing of welds with strength mismatch can lead to deviation of the crack path from the initial crack growth plane. Current fracture mechanics standards do not give guidance for analyses of the effect of crack path on the tearing ...

Determination of Fatigue Crack Paths

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 1997
The complete solution of the problem of a fatigue crack growing from an initial crack includes determination of the crack path. Macroscopic aspects of the main features of the path taken by a growing fatigue crack in a metallic material are reasonably well understood in a qualitative sense.

Crack path stability in cracked panel

Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers, 2004
Abstract The prediction of the crack growth path plays a significant role in the estimation of the final shape of broken solids and structures. Furthermore, the study of the crack path in broken specimens renders the loading conditions just before fracture.

Effect of crack angles on energy characteristics of sandstones under a complex stress path

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2019
In order to obtain influence laws of crack angles on energy characteristics of sandstones in complex stress environment, this study performed a cyclic loading and unloading test under stress gradients with a constant lower limit of stress on sandstone ...
