Comparison of methods for crack tip opening displacement toughness determination

Journal of Materials Science, 1991
The crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) initiation toughness has been obtained by different methods in Cr and Cr-Mo steels at 30, 200 and 400 ‡C. The crack tip stretching and grain deformation has been investigated by scanning electron microscope and optical microscopic studies and by microhardness measurements.

Determination of Crack-Tip Opening Displacement in T-Type Wedge Opening Loaded Specimen

Experimental Mechanics, 2019
The protective layer at the crack tip of an alloy component can be damaged, and the resistance to crack propagation can be reduced by the combined effects of stress and a corrosive environment. Therefore, the measurement of crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) can be applied to characterize the crack propagation rate (da/dt) during stress corrosion ...

A Comparison of Crack-Tip Opening Displacement Ductile Instability Analyses

1989
This paper presents the results of a large test program undertaken to study ductile fracture in aluminum weldments. The main body of the experimental program consisted of a series of wide-plate tests on 10-mm-thick parent material and welded aluminum alloy center-cracked panels.

Relationships Between Various Definitions of the Crack Tip Opening Displacement

1986
A close examination of the CTOD problem reveals that the crack tip opening displacement is very much a matter of definition. Various definitions are in use either for analytical treatment or for experimental determination. A comparison of these shows that by the widely used experimental methods a quantity is determined which is at variance with the ...

Engineering Aspects of Crack-Tip Opening Displacement Fracture Toughness Testing

1985
An investigation of the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) fracture behavior of four pressure vessel steels and one ship steel has been conducted. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the fracture behavior of the steels, to study the effects of CTOD testing variables, to examine various methods of evaluating test records, and to study ...

Ultra-Fine-Grained Steel: Fracture Toughness (Crack-Tip-Opening Displacement)

2014
Fracture toughness is directly dependent on the stress and strain distribution ahead of a crack and the critical values of stress and strain for crack initiation. The ferrite grain size strongly affects these parameters. The variation in these parameters caused by the ferrite grain refinement determines the fracture toughness and fracture mode.

Crack-tip toughness from vickers crack-tip opening displacements for materials with strongly rising R-curves

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 2011
Accurate measurements of the intrinsic crack-tip toughness, KI0, are essential to understanding the strength and toughness of bridging ceramics. Furthermore, even the most carefully made R-curve measurements cannot accurately assess this initial toughness point.

An Analytical Elastic-Plastic Solution of Crack Tip Opening Displacement

2003
A thin plate with a straight crack is considered. It is assumed that the plate material is ductile and that plastic zones around crack tips will occur under loading. This means that in these zones the material yields and the phenomenon of crack opening is started.

Evaluation of the Crack-Tip-Opening-Displacement (VR) Resistance Curve Method

1986
Stable crack growth data were used to calculate VR curves for eleven material and thickness combinations. The materials were either aluminum alloys or steels. The specimens were either compact or middle-crack-tension specimens ranging in thickness from 0.5 to 25 mm.
