Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Study on Crack Development of Frame Beams with U-Shaped Engineered Cementitious Composites Cover Layer Under Negative Moments

open access: yesApplied Sciences
In order to enhance the durability of concrete frame beams, a U-shaped engineered cementitious composites (ECC) protective layer is applied at the end of the frame beams.

Crack roughness and avalanche precursors in the random fuse model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We analyze the scaling of the crack roughness and of avalanche precursors in the two dimensional random fuse model by numerical simulations, employing large system sizes and extensive sample averaging.

Analytical Modeling of Crack Widths and Cracking Loads in Structural RC Members

open access: yesInfrastructures, 2022
Crack width is a major performance criterion in reinforced-concrete structures, in general, and is of utmost importance in ensuring bridge performance, in particular. A reliable theory-based method is required to assess crack widths and gain insight into their dependence on material, geometry, and loading parameters.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Steady-State Cracks in Viscoelastic Lattice Models II

open access: yes, 1998
We present the analytic solution of the Mode III steady-state crack in a square lattice with piecewise linear springs and Kelvin viscosity. We show how the results simplify in the limit of large width. We relate our results to a model where the continuum

A predictive fatigue life model for anodized 7050 aluminium alloy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The objective of this study is to predict fatigue life of anodized 7050 aluminum alloy specimens. In the case of anodized 7050-T7451 alloy, fractographic observations of fatigue tested specimens showed that pickling pits were the predominant sites for ...

Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Cracks and fingers: dynamics of ductile fracture in an aqueous foam [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Fracture of a quasi-two-dimensional aqueous foam by injection of air can occur via two distinct mechanisms, termed brittle and ductile, which are analogous to crack modes observed for crystalline atomic solids such as metals. In the present work we focus
