Mechanical behavior of cracked solids

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1992
Abstract A general relation between the apparent fracture toughness and the crack growth distance developed earlier is used to study mechanical behavior of a micro-cracked solid in this paper. A one-dimensional model is constructed in which the micro-crack length is regarded as an internal variable.

On the influence of crack front curvature on the fracture behavior of nanoscale cracks

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2015
Abstract Atomic-scale fracture processes are traditionally investigated in quasi-2D models of straight, infinite cracks. This approach neglects crack front curvature effects, which might be particularly important for nanoscale crack nuclei in semi-brittle materials.

Fracture Behavior of Cracked Ring Specimen at Different Crack Positions

Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 2019
Abstract The previous research review of piping systems revealed that the plastic pipe companies suffered from many problems in natural gas pipeline systems. One of the most significant problems that appeared in the piping systems are external cracks due to manufacturing processes, welding technique, and installation processes.

Study on fatigue crack closure behavior for various cracked geometries

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1997
Abstract Based on the two-dimensional weight function method, Newman's crack closure model was extended to study fatigue crack closure behavior at three stress ratios for four plane stress specimen geometries: center-cracked plate, single-edge-cracked plate (tension), single-edge-cracked plate (bending) and single-edge-notch-tension cracked plate ...

Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Surface Cracks in Silicon Nitride

1994
Cyclic fatigue crack growth tests of silicon nitride specimens with surface cracks as well as through-the-thickness cracks were carried out. The surface crack length was measured by a surface film gage technique. The fatigue crack growth rate for surface cracks was less than that for through-the-thickness cracks. From SEM observations, more significant

Effect of Crack-Tip Stresses on Stress Corrosion Cracking Behavior

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2010
It is well documented that the applied load for a given material/environment system has a significant effect on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior in terms of K ISCC values as well as on the K-da/dt relation. Traditionally, the role of crack-tip stress has not received proper attention but rather the crack-tip strain that is supposedly ...

Crack closure: An explanation for small fatigue crack growth behavior

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1985
Abstract The deceleration and/or acceleration of small fatigue crack growth rates with increasing stress intensity range, ΔK, can be explained by crack closure. Crack closure additionally appears to offer an explanation as to why some small cracks reach a point at which they cease to propagate.

Thermoelastic and hygrothermoelastic behavior of cracks

1991
The failure behavior of solids is affected not only by mechanical loads but also by the change of temperature and/or moisture. These external disturbances can interact and their influence on the integrity of structural members can be reflected in the energy stored in a unit volume of material.

Crack Closure Behavior of Surface Cracks Under Pure Bending

1988
By the application of a compliance technique the fatigue crack closure behavior of surface cracks in British Standard or Low Alloy Steels, Composition and Properties (BS) 4360-50D structural steel was investigated under pure bending. Crack closure at the vicinity of surface intersection points was monitored by use of an Elber type gage, whereas the ...
