Scaling of sense organs that control flight: Size and sensory cell number of dipteran fly halteres
Halteres of dipteran flies replace hindwings and act as flight‐controlling gyroscopes. Their length scales in proportion to wing length, and lengths of both scale against body size with negative allometry. The number of mechanosensory cells halteres carry is independent of body size, but varies between dipteran groups.
