Out in the cold? A review of Early Middle Palaeolithic settlements in northern Central Europe, age data and geological preconditions for site formation and preservation

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The characteristics of settlement of Neanderthals in northern Central Europe during the earlier phases of the Middle Palaeolithic (Marine Isotope Stage 8–6) have been a matter of debate for decades, specifically regarding the population dynamics at such latitudes during the coldest phases. In this paper, we review the known archaeological record of the

Largest impact craters on Venus [PDF]

open access: yes
High-resolution radar images from the Magellan spacecraft have allowed us to perform a detailed study on 25 large impact craters on Venus with diameters from 70 to 280 km.

Morphology and distribution of lakes under the Laurentide Ice Sheet: implications for ice flow dynamics

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
This study examines the distribution and morphology of lakes under the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) to investigate relationships with ice flow velocity, bedrock and basal thermal regime. Palaeo‐ice streams and lobes were important components of the LIS, and properties of lakes in those regions are quantified at high resolution.

Multi-Platform Integrated Analysis of the Degradation Patterns of Impact Crater Populations on the Lunar Surface

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Following the processing of the Chang’e-4 satellite images, Chang’e-4 landing camera images, and Yutu-2 panoramic camera images, data were obtained in a variety of resolutions, including digital elevation model (DEM) and digital orthophoto map (DOM).

Impact crater morphology and the structure of Europa's ice shell

open access: yes, 2017
We performed numerical simulations of impact crater formation on Europa to infer the thickness and structure of its ice shell. The simulations were performed using iSALE to test both the conductive ice shell over ocean and the conductive lid over warm ...

Using incentive payments to promote human–carnivore coexistence

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract For many large carnivores, minimizing the financial burden they impose on local people is critical to their conservation. Incentive‐based programs that provide people with financial benefits for taking pro‐conservation actions or achieving conservation goals are a promising tool for promoting human–carnivore coexistence. Although the number of

Breakup of meteoroids in the Venusian atmosphere and its effects on crater formation [PDF]

open access: yes
Early results of the Magellan mission to Venus show that almost all of the observed impact craters appear to be unaffected by erosion, burial, and tectonic deformation.
