The Vitamin Craze

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1980
There would be no controversy about the role of vitamin use in health and disease if all health professionals and those whose commentary on health matters is addressed to the public adhered to facts rather than promoting sensational anecdotes alleging efficacy, and if they heeded the axiom that, in matters of health, no substance is safe until proved ...

Craze growth and craze interactions

Journal of Materials Science, 1981
A dislocation array method of two-dimensional stress analysis has been used to interpret commonly-observed features of craze growth in glassy polymers. It is deduced from the lack of deviation of craze pairs that the tensile stress across an air craze is more than 90% of the applied stress.

Crazing mechanisms and craze healing in glassy polymers

Journal of Materials Science, 1989
When held at temperatures above the glass transition temperature, crazes in certain polymers may be made to heal; that is, the crazed material may be made to recover the mechanical properties it had prior to crazing. Using thin films of a variety of polymers, we have investigated whether the mechanism of entanglement loss during crazing influences the ...

Crazes in solvent vapours at very low pressure: craze stress and craze structure

Polymer, 1988
Abstract The shape and size of the single craze at a running crack tip in poly(methyl methacrylate) has been measured in a very low pressure toluene gas environment by means of optical interferometry. It has been shown in a previous paper that there is a critical crack velocity below which the craze becomes up to 4 times longer than in air, whereas ...

Nonlinear Analysis of Crazes

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1986
This paper concerns the nonlinear mechanical behavior of a single craze of finite length contained in an extended linear elastic medium. The craze is modeled as a distributed spring with a nonlinear force-displacement relation, which exhibits a hysteresis loop upon unloading.

Crazes in amorphous polymers I. Variety of the structure of crazes and classification of different types of crazes

Colloid & Polymer Science, 1989
In investigating 0.5- to 5 Μm-thick deformed samples in a 1000 kV high-voltage electron microscope, the formation and structure of crazes were studied in different amorphous polymers (PS, SAN, PVC, and the highly radiation-sensitive polymers PMMA and PC). Different craze types were found and classified.

Craze yielding and stress-strain characteristics of crazes in polystyrene

Philosophical Magazine, 1972
Abstract The crazing behaviour of a grade of polystyrene which crazes profusely when tested in tension has been studied at 293°K using quantitative optical, electron and electron scanning microscopy. Tensile tests on this material showed that a high density of crazes was produced at room temperature.
