Testing the contribution of vertebrate predators and leaf traits to mainland–island differences in insect herbivory on oaks

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 1, Page 140-154, January 2025.
The authors explored how insularity influences herbivory in oaks across island–mainland sites. By experimentally excluding vertebrate predators (e.g. birds, bats) and measuring leaf traits (e.g. phenolics, specific leaf area, nutrients), they provide insights into the mechanisms driving island–mainland herbivory patterns.

A review of commercial captive breeding of parrots as a supply‐side intervention to address unsustainable trade

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 5, October 2024.
Abstract The volume and scale of commercial captive breeding of parrots have grown dramatically in recent decades. Although it has been proposed, and is often assumed, that captive breeding can reduce pressure on wild populations, there has been little scrutiny of the scale, viability, or impacts of captive breeding to prevent overexploitation among ...

Soil carbon and nitrogen cycling at the atmosphere–soil interface: Quantifying the responses of biocrust–soil interactions to global change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2024.
Despite the critical role of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) in dryland C and N cycles, little is known about how biocrust‐derived C and N move into the soil. This study reveals how biocrusts facilitate the downward movement of C and N and drive the formation of mineral‐associated organic matter in subcrust soils.
