The effect of creep cavitation on the fatigue life under creep-fatigue interaction
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 1995Abstract Low cycle fatigue tests have been carried out with three different materials (1Cr-Mo-V steel, 12Cr-Mo-V steel and 304 stainless steel) for the investigation of the effect of surface roughness on the fatigue life. To see the effect systematically, we have chosen those materials which may or may not form grain boundary cavities.

The long-term response of materials to load in either a steady or fluctuating form is considered. The role of the reinforcement in resisting the load is considered as well as the role of the resin in protecting the reinforcement and transferring the load to the fibres.

The fatigue and creep interaction
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1975A new approach has been proposed to the problem of interaction of fatigue and creep. That is, a constitutive equation for crack propagation was proposed which includes both the number of cycles N and time t based on the stochastic and kinetic theory approaches to time-dependent fracture. Using dhis equation the failure life rule was studied.

In this chapter, the strain methods detailed in ASME VIII-2 for designing pressure vessels under repetitive cyclic loading conditions in the creep range is discussed. Such cycles are generally encountered in power plants as well as petrochemical plants under normal operating conditions.

Fatigue consists of the cycling loading of a structure over time, that is loading and unloading. Thus, the new aspect introduced is the unloading, which suppresses proportional loading at the crack tip and leads to the accumulation of residual stresses after unloading.

In Chap. 12 we described the monotonic behavior of a composite under ambient temperature conditions of loading. There are many applications of composites where cyclic fatigue and high-temperature, i.e., creep conditions prevail. Accordingly, in this chapter we go further in complexity and describe the fatigue and creep behavior of composites.
