Secularism, Gender and Masculinity in Nineteenth‐Century Cremation in Europe and the USA
Gender &History, EarlyView.ABSTRACT This essay explores, from transnational perspectives, the early history of modern cremation, which developed in the long nineteenth century with secularist connotations. I argue that the beginnings of modern cremation were shaped by bourgeois men who claimed certain identifiers for themselves in a gendering and Othering way.

The caliph and the falcons: a ninth‐century history from Iceland to Iraq
Early Medieval Europe, EarlyView.In the late ninth and early tenth centuries, an extraordinary number of falcons were given to the ʿAbbāsid caliphs in Baghdad, many of which were white. Gifts from competing dynasties in the northern provinces of the Caliphate, at least some of these birds were almost certainly gyrfalcons from near the Arctic Circle.
