Partially embedded piles subjected to critical buckling load—Sensitivity analysis

Computers & Structures, 1996
The first variation of the critical buckling load of a pile partially embedded in a soil due to a change of a design variable is derived. The one-dimensional idealization of the pile in conjunction with the soil represented by the Winkler-type elastic foundation is considered. The effect of the skin friction is neglected. The pile material and the soil

Lower Bounds for Critical Buckling Load Using Matrix Norms

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1993
A method is proposed to compute lower bounds for the critical buckling load in problems of matrix structural analysis and in finite-element analysis. The method is based on the fact that the critical buckling load is equal to the reciprocal of the spectral radius of a modified geometric stiffness matrix for the problem.

Predicting the Critical Buckling Load for a Graphite/Epoxy Laminate

Journal of Composites Technology and Research, 1980
The critical buckling load for a slender specimen of an isotropic, homogeneous material can usually be predicted adequately from fundamental strength-of-materials considerations. The extension of this approach to specimens of composite materials can be accomplished formally by using appropriate anisotropic elastic constants in the Euler buckling ...

The calculation of critical buckling loads for externally constrained structures

Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1999
Summary: A method of identifying the critical load of structures, the buckling shape of which is constrained, is presented based on two novel techniques. The first identifies this critical or limit point buckling value using a linear, complementary algorithm to solve what is shown to be a quadratic programming problem, while the second adopts a ...

Determination of critical load for flange buckling in concentrically loaded pultruded columns

Composites Part B: Engineering, 2004
Abstract Physical testing and theoretical methods to determine the critical local flange buckling load in concentric pultruded columns are presented. Knowledge of this critical load for wide flange profiles is required in a new universal column design procedure.

Critical speeds and buckling loads of a pre-twisted rotor

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1995
Abstract The equations of motion of a pre-twisted rotor subjected to a compressive axial load have been derived by including the effects of transverse shear, rotatory inertia and gyroscopic moments to model material removal systems which have external flutes. The finite element method is used to obtain a system of ordinary differential equations. C 0

The critical loading for lateral buckling of continuous welded rail

Journal of Zhejiang University-SCIENCE A, 2005
The most significant differences between continuous welded rails (CWRs) and general split-type connectors are axial compression in the longitudinal direction, buckling stability and other issues generated under the influence of thermal effect. Under thermal effect, a dynamical behavior similar to that of a beam fixed on two sides occurs in the central ...

Critical load and post-buckling analysis by fem using energy balancing technique

Computers & Structures, 1985
Within the framework of the finite element displacement method, a new solution strategy is introduced to trace the nonlinear pre- and post- buckling paths of elastic structures and, to define their limit and bifurcation points, respectively. The unique feature of the proposed approach is a one-step energy based line-search strategy which drastically ...

Shape optimization of a nonshallow arch towards critical buckling load

2006
We consider a nonshallow arch, clamped at its ends and submitted to a reference loading f. The aim of this work is to find the shape of the midcurve of the arch in order to maximize the critical buckling load of the arch.
