We discuss a variety of adaptive critic designs (ACDs) for neurocontrol. These are suitable for learning in noisy, nonlinear, and nonstationary environments. They have common roots as generalizations of dynamic programming for neural reinforcement learning approaches.

Critical Design has emerged as an important concept in HCI research and practice. Yet researchers have noted that its uptake has been limited by certain lacks of intellectual infrastructure theories, methodologies, canons and exemplars, and a community of practice. We argue that one way to create this infrastructure is to cultivate a community adept at

Critical Design and the Robotic Imaginary: Design Criticism and Critical Robots
2022This paper brings critical design and design criticism to critical robot studies. Critical design can be described as an umbrella term for approaches making use of speculative designs to highlight and challenge narrow assumptions, preconceptions or even taken-for-granted truths about the role products play (in a wide sense) in everyday life.

Design reviews are an essential part of any design process. However, taking the criticism that comes from such reviews can be hard. The word criticism even has a slightly negative connotation in our culture. But design criticism is invaluable, and effectively giving and receiving it are skills that every software designer needs to master.

Critical design does not solve problems but raises questions. It uses design to explore alternative views of the world, to materialise questions and to engage the audience into a reflective state. However its generalisation suffers from a lack of shareable methodology.

The design of time-critical conversations
Microprocessing and Microprogramming, 1993Abstract The problems associated with ensuring a correct and timely response are particularly acute in computing systems which must satisfy critical timing requirements. Faults must be recognised promptly and the overheads of state restoration and retries must be tightly controlled so that real-world time constraints are not violated.

What is "critical" about critical design?
Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2013Critical design is a research through design methodology that foregrounds the ethics of design practice, reveals potentially hidden agendas and values, and explores alternative design values. While it seems to be a timely fit for today's socially, aesthetically, and ethically oriented approaches to HCI, its adoption seems surprisingly limited. We argue

Creating critical gameplay design
Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology, 2010This paper discusses the critical gameplay design project and its newest developments. After being exhibited in five national and international venues in 2009--2010, the project has been reconstituted with 3 new games that critique specific aspects of standard gameplay.
