Abstract In 1971, Graham and Pollak provided a formula for the determinant of the distance matrix of any tree on n vertices. Yan and Yeh reproved this by exploiting the fact that pendant vertices can be deleted from trees without changing the remaining entries of the distance matrix.

Variations on a critical distance theme [PDF]
We investigate how the fatigue limit of notched specimens calculated with the Theory of Critical Distance (TCD) changes when variations in the value of the critical distance itself are considered. We motivate our study by showing how attempts at introducing a plastic zone correction in the derivation of the formula for the critical ...

Total $k$-distance domination critical graphs [PDF]
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G=(V,E)$ is called a total$k$-distance dominating set if every vertex in $V$ is withindistance $k$ of a vertex in $S$.

A New Technology for Smooth Blasting without Detonating Cord for Rock Tunnel Excavation
In this paper, the aim is to achieve safe, rapid excavation of an extra-long, large-cross-section highway tunnel in Eastern Tianshan, as well as to reduce production costs, simplify production processes, reduce cycle time, and improve production ...

Galileo's Refutation of the Speed-Distance Law of Fall Rehabilitated [PDF]
Galileo's refutation of the speed-distance law of fall in his Two New Sciences is routinely dismissed as a moment of confused argumentation. We urge that Galileo's argument correctly identified why the speed-distance law is untenable, failing only in its

Critical Issues in Open and Distance Education Research
Despite its mainstreaming into the broader educational ecology, open and distance education (ODE) still leaves much to be desired in terms of both practice and research. Inspired and informed by the author’s 35 years of experience as an ODE practitioner,

Sparse Distributed Memory: understanding the speed and robustness of expert memory
How can experts, sometimes in exacting detail, almost immediately and very precisely recall memory items from a vast repertoire? The problem in which we will be interested concerns models of theoretical neuroscience that could explain the speed and ...
