Extending the theory of critical distances to quasi-brittle fracture

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2021
Abstract The results of theoretical and experimental studies of brittle and quasi-brittle fracture of plaster plates containing a circular hole and subjected to non-uniformly distributed compression are presented. This paper summarizes the results, partially published by the author earlier.

Fatigue Failure Analysis Using the Theory of Critical Distance

Key Engineering Materials, 2011
This paper explores the initial potential of theory of critical distance (TCD) which offers essential fatigue failure prediction in engineering components. The intention is to find the most appropriate TCD approach for a case of multiple stress concentration features in future research.

Application of the Theory of Critical Distance to Fretting Fatigue

2008
Fretting fatigue occurs at the contact interface of mechanical joints which are designed to be at rest but that nevertheless experience some sort of relative movement due to vibration. This work aims to develop a crack initiation threshold condition for fretting fatigue.

Microstructural Parameters in the Theory of Critical Distances

Materials Science Forum, 2007
The work described below investigates, for the first time, the link between microstructural parameters such as grain size and the length constant L which is known as the critical distance. L is frequently used in the prediction of failure processes such as brittle fracture and fatigue, initiated at stress concentration features such as notches.

Fatigue Strength and Life Estimation Methods Using Critical Distance Stress Theory

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
Generallythe critical distance stress theory was applied for the fatigue limitestimation of general structures. In thismethod, it needs only two parameters, fatiguelimit of smooth specimen (σw0), and threshold stress intensityfactor range (∆Kth). In this paper we extended this method for theestimation of low cycle fatigue lifetoo.

The Theory of Critical Distances: A link to micromechanisms

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2017
Abstract The Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) is a methodology for prediction of the effect of stress concentration features on material failure, especially cracking-related mechanisms such as fatigue and brittle fracture. It has a long history but has become much more relevant to industrial problems in recent years thanks to the widespread ...

Low Cycle Fatigue Estimation Based on the Critical Distance Stress Theory

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Generally the critical distance stress theory was applied for the fatigue limit estimation of general structures using fatigue limit of smooth specimen (σw0), and threshold stress intensity factor range (Kth). In this paper we extended this method for the estimation of low cycle fatigue life too.

The Theory of Critical Distances: Applications in Fatigue

2008
This papers reviews the use of the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) to predict high-cycle fatigue strength of real components when the complexity of their geometry causes stress concentration phenomena.

Applications of critical point theory of distance functions to geometry

Geometriae Dedicata, 1991
The author uses the critical point theory of distance functions to obtain two results. First he considers a complete open manifold \(M^ n\) of nonnegative sectional curvature and rapidly increasing volume and gives a new proof for the following Theorem A [the reviewer and \textit{V. Toponogov}, Sib. Mat. Zh. 26, No.

Analysis of notch effect in PMMA using the Theory of Critical Distances

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2012
Abstract The Theory of Critical Distances is actually a group of methodologies, all of them using a characteristic material length parameter when performing fracture assessments on any kind of stress risers. In this paper, the application of the Theory of Critical Distances on Polymethyl methacrylate is analysed, the parameters involved in the ...
