Critical exponents for groups of isometries [PDF]

open access: yesGeometriae Dedicata, 2007
Let \(\Gamma\) be a free group acting by isometries on a \(\text{CAT}(-1)\) space \((X,d_X)\) as a convex co-compact group and let \(\Gamma_0\) be a normal subgroup. The author shows that if the quotient group \(\Gamma/\Gamma_0\) is amenable, then \(\delta(\Gamma_0)=\delta(\Gamma)\).

A Critical Take on the Policy Recommendations of the EU High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Risk Regulation, 2019
The European Commission recently published the policy recommendations of its “High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence”: a heavily anticipated document, particularly in the context of the stated ambition of the new Commission President to ...

Methodological quality of case series studies: an introduction to the JBI critical appraisal tool

open access: yesThe JBI Database of Systematic Reviews and Implementation Reports, 2019
Introduction: Systematic reviews provide a rigorous synthesis of the best available evidence regarding a certain question. Where high-quality evidence is lacking, systematic reviewers may choose to rely on case series studies to provide information in ...

Smith and critical groups of polar graphs [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 2019
We compute the elementary divisors of the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of families of polar graphs. These graphs have as vertices the isotropic one-dimensional subspaces of finite vector spaces with respect to non-degenerate forms, with adjacency given by orthogonality.

Dynamic Renormalization Group Approach to Self-Organized Critical Phenomena

open access: yes, 1994
Two different models exhibiting self-organized criticality are analyzed by means of the dynamic renormalization group. Although the two models differ by their behavior under a parity transformation of the order parameter, it is shown that they both ...

What to Do When Medical Evidence Can Only Be Generated Through Routine Data: An Example From Pediatric Oncology

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Children undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation often receive off‐label rituximab treatment for Epstein–Barr virus reactivation, using adult dosing without pediatric evidence. This project aims to develop a clinical decision support tool (CDSS) that provides evidence‐based dosing scenarios by analyzing real‐world patient data.

Characterizing preclinical sub‐phenotypic models of acute respiratory distress syndrome: An experimental ovine study

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2021
The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) describes a heterogenous population of patients with acute severe respiratory failure. However, contemporary advances have begun to identify distinct sub‐phenotypes that exist within its broader envelope ...

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

A Note on the Critical Group of a Line Graph [PDF]

open access: yesThe Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2011
This note answers a question posed by Levine. The main result shows that under certain circumstances a critical group of a directed graph is the quotient of a critical group of its directed line graph.

The effective potential, critical point scaling and the renormalization group

open access: yes, 1998
The desirability of evaluating the effective potential in field theories near a phase transition has been recognized in a number of different areas. We show that recent Monte Carlo simulations for the probability distribution for the order parameter in ...
