Statistics of statisticians: Critical mass of statistics and operational research groups in the UK [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Using a recently developed model, inspired by mean field theory in statistical physics, and data from the UK's Research Assessment Exercise, we analyse the relationship between the quality of statistics and operational research groups and the quantity ...

Critical Thinking in Groups [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Leadership Education, 2009
It gladdened my heart when the faculty of organizational leadership at my university agreed to require a course in critical thinking. The evidence had been mounting that one way we could prepare students to participate in leadership without knowing precisely what they would be asked to do in the workplace was to develop their powers of critical ...

The critical number of finite abelian groups [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Number Theory, 2009
Let G be an additive, finite abelian group. The critical number $\mathsf{cr}(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that for every subset $S \subset G \setminus \{0\}$ with $|S| \ge \ell$ the following holds: Every element of $G$ can be written as a nonempty sum of distinct elements from $S$. The critical number was first studied by P.

Multi-tiling sets, Riesz bases, and sampling near the critical density in LCA groups [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We prove the existence of sampling sets and interpolation sets near the critical density, in Paley Wiener spaces of a locally compact abelian (LCA) group G .

Focus groups: From collecting data to critical pedagogical practice [PDF]

open access: yesZbornik Instituta za pedagoška istraživanja, 2007
This paper presents the positivist and constructivist theory and practice of focus groups. We pointed out to the paradigmatic differences in notional attributes of focus groups, as well as to the historic circumstances of their appearance.

On the critical group of the n-cube [PDF]

open access: yesLinear Algebra and its Applications, 2003
AbstractReiner proposed two conjectures about the structure of the critical group of the n-cube Qn. In this paper we confirm them. Furthermore we describe its p-primary structure for all odd primes p. The results are generalized to Cartesian product of complete graphs Kn1×⋯×Knk by Jacobson, Niedermaier and Reiner.

A note on the Dancer–Fučík spectra of the fractional p-Laplacian and Laplacian operators

open access: yesAdvances in Nonlinear Analysis, 2015
We study the Dancer–Fučík spectrum of the fractional p-Laplacian operator. We construct an unbounded sequence of decreasing curves in the spectrum using a suitable minimax scheme. For p = 2, we present a very accurate local analysis.

Properties of critical groups

open access: yesJournal of Algebra, 1980
Knowledge of properties and of the structure of so-called f-cr i t ical groups for a given class f of groups can often help to get detailed information for the structure of those groups, which belong to f . I f f is a class of groups, we say that a group G is f-cri t ical , if G ¢ f , but H ~ f for all proper subgroups H o f G.

Abelian networks III: The critical group [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 2015
The critical group of an abelian network is a finite abelian group that governs the behavior of the network on large inputs. It generalizes the sandpile group of a graph. We show that the critical group of an irreducible abelian network acts freely and transitively on recurrent states of the network.

The unpredictably eruptive dynamics of spruce budworm populations in eastern Canada

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We examine historical population data for spruce budworm from several locations through the period 1930–1997, and use density‐dependent recruitment curves to test whether the pattern of population growth over time is more consistent with Royama's (1984; Ecological Monographs 54:429–462) linear R(t) model of harmonic oscillation at Green River New ...
