Critical pathways: A critical analysis
International Journal of Nursing Practice, 1996This paper explores critical pathways in relation to nursing knowledge and practice. Critical pathways, as part of managed care, have evolved from contemporary economic and management influences on health care. Critical analysis of actual texts of critical pathways and relevant published literature reveals how certain knowledge bases and interests are ...

Neural Response Interpretation through the Lens of Critical Pathways
Is critical input information encoded in specific sparse pathways within the neural network? In this work, we discuss the problem of identifying these critical pathways and subsequently leverage them for interpreting the network's response to an input ...

Critical Pathways in Cardiology: A Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine, 2002
Critical pathways are care plans that detail the essential steps in patient care with a view to describing the expected progress of the patient. The authors' review of the literature suggest the use of critical pathways reduces the cost of care and the length of patient stay in hospital.

Nursing Management (Springhouse), 1994
A multipurpose six-page, three-fold flow sheet improves patient outcomes, meets JCAHO standards and facilitates easy tracking of a patient's progress. The flow sheet is divided into nursing process, expected patient outcomes, critical pathway and variance report. Outcomes management is an effective process to control costs and improve patient outcomes.

Expanding the Use of Critical Pathways in Critical Care
Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing, 1994Critical pathways are known to decrease the patient's length of stay while simultaneously using resources effectively and efficiently. Several additional functions of critical pathways exist: pathways are used as tools for teaching; to predict and prevent complications; streamline charting; and anticipate staffing needs.

Evaluation of a Critical Pathway for Pneumonia
Journal For Healthcare Quality, 1997Pneumonia is the third most frequent admission diagnosis at Macomb Hospital Center. The average length of stay for this diagnosis (DRGs 89 and 90) was 9.07 days. After the initiation of a critical pathway that begins in the emergency department, the average length of stay decreased to 7.11 days.

Upgrading Practice with Critical Pathways
The American Journal of Nursing, 1992subject of the first pathway because the length of stay is relatively short and the surgical recovery uncomplicated. Early and close collaboration with our orthopaedic physicians enabled us to deve op a form consistent with their various practice styles and to gain their support once we implemented the pathway.

Empyema: Development of a Critical Pathway
Seminars in Pediatric Surgery, 2002Over the past 20 years at the authors' institution, the management of empyema has evolved. The authors recently have developed a critical pathway in an effort to facilitate diagnosis, guide therapy, and reduce cost. Currently, the average length of stay using this pathway is 4 to 5 days with decreased cost compared to the historic length of stay and a ...

Critical pathways in microbial virulence
Journal of Clinical Periodontology, 2005AbstractThe virulence of a microbe represents a combination of complex factors including the agent's transmissibility and the severity of the disease associated with infection and is also significantly influenced by the susceptibility of the colonized host.

Developing a critical pathway for orientation
American Journal of Critical Care, 1994A direct correlation exists between job satisfaction and employee retention with an organized and compassionate orientation process for new employees on a nursing unit. It is generally recognized that preceptorship/mentoring is the most desirable orientation modality; however, situations occasionally require orientees to work with several preceptors ...
