Magnetism from conductors and enhanced nonlinear phenomena

, 1999
We show that microstructures built from nonmagnetic conducting sheets exhibit an effective magnetic permeability /spl mu//sub eff/, which can be tuned to values not accessible in naturally occurring materials, including large imaginary components of /spl

Critical phenomena in ferroelectrics

Physics Letters, 1966
Abstract High precision measurements are reported of the temperature dependence of low frequency dielectric constants near to ferroelectric critical points. Triglycine sulphate exhibits no deviation from Curie's law to within 10 −4 of the Curie temperature.

Critical point phenomena

Contemporary Physics, 1969
Abstract During the last decade considerable effort has been expended in the study of critical phenomena. These investigations are especially rewarding because they provide important links between several diverse branches of physics. For example, antiferromagnets, pure fluids, binary solutions and alloys all exhibit analogous critical behaviour.

Critical phenomena at interfaces

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1990
Abstract The interface between two phases may exhibit significant structural changes if one of them comes close to a phase transition in its bulk. Irrespective of the order of the bulk transition these structural changes of the interfaces manifest as critical phenomena of their own linking the space dimensions two and three.

Critical phenomena in antiferroelectrics

Soviet Physics Journal, 1972
An equation of state for an antiferroelectric is proposed, which couples the field strength, temperature, and polarization, and has isotherms that display double hysteresis loops and a critical point. On the phase diagram of field versus temperature two critical points, symmetrically placed with respect to the temperature axis, are observed.

Critical phenomena at interfaces

Reports on Progress in Physics, 1984
Equilibrium aspects of the structure and thermodynamics of the interfacial region separating two coexisting phases near criticality are reviewed. Brief surveys of pertinent rigorous and exact results and experiments are included. Phenomenological approaches and renormalisation group results, along with implications on such topics as universality and ...

Critical Phenomena in Solids

Annual Review of Materials Science, 1973
The last several years have seen an explosion of activity in the field of critical phenomena in general. This enormous interest in the thermodynamic singulari ties and long range spatial correlations existing at a second order transition was triggered by the realization that the Landau universal phenomenological theory of critical phenomena ( l ) is ...
