Critical alignments in plane mirror interferometry

Precision Engineering, 1993
Abstract Each axis of a plane mirror interferometer has three associated measurement vectors: the interferometer beam, mirror normal, and axis of measurement. The transducer axis of a plane mirror interferometer target is the mirror normal. This contrasts with a retroflector for which the transducer axis is the interferometer beam.

Planing in Shallow Water at Critical Speed

Journal of Ship Research, 2013
This article summarizes experiments to determine the effect of shallow water on flat-bottomed prismatic hulls towed fixed in heave and trim over a wide range of speed regimes. The experimental design allowed for the separate measurement of pressure forces normal to the bottom and viscous forces tangential to the bottom.

Multiaxial cycle counting for critical plane methods

International Journal of Fatigue, 2003
The critical plane method has proven to be a popular analytical tool for estimating multiaxial fatigue. Based on the strain-life approach to fatigue, the method relies on a cycle counting routine to identify cycles and a damage model to assess damage for each cycle.

Influence of twinning planes on upper critical fields

Zeitschrift fr Physik B Condensed Matter, 1991
Within the framework of a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a scalar order parameter, we discuss the effect of the presence of twinning planes on the behavior of the upper critical field as function of the temperature. In particular we study the case of a finite array of planes in the region of weak magnetic field, both from the analytical and the numerical ...

Random Vibration Fatigue: Frequency Domain Critical Plane Approaches

Volume 9: Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Fluids, 2013
Frequency domain analysis offers a very efficient method for the fatigue durability assessment of structures subjected to vibration loading. It also allows engineers to gain valuable insight into system behavior and characteristics that are not easily recognized in the time domain. With some reasonable assumptions, most importantly linearity and steady

Computing Tire Component Durability via Critical Plane Analysis

Tire Science And Technology, 2019
ABSTRACT Tire developers are responsible for designing against the possibility of crack development in each of the various components of a tire. The task requires knowledge of the fatigue behavior of each compound in the tire, as well as adequate accounting for the multiaxial stresses carried by tire materials.

Critical phenomena near free surfaces and defect planes

Physical Review B, 1981
We discuss the universality classes of the local critical behavior of a bulk system near a free surface and near an internal plane of defects. A phase diagram and plausible renormalization-group flow properties for a general model which encompasses both cases are described qualitatively.

An Effective Algorithm For Critical Plane Calculation

ECMS 2025 Proceedings edited by Marco Scarpa, Salvatore Cavalieri, Salvatore Serrano, Fabrizio De Vita
In most engineering applications the structural elements are exposed to multiaxial loading, in which case fatigue life estimations are based on critical plane search. The main drawback of these calculations is the huge computational cost, which can only be reduced by the sacrifice of accuracy.

Nonuniversal and surface critical behavior near a defect plane

Physical Review B, 1989
The existence of nonuniversal, as well as surface (universal) critical behavior near a defect plane is demonstrated on a one-dimensional quantum lattice gas model, belonging to the two-dimensional Ising universality class. According to numerical results the weak defect region is attracted by a line of fixed points starting at the bulk critical point ...

Programmable control plane for mission critical wireless networks

The Journal of Defense Modeling and Simulation: Applications, Methodology, Technology, 2017
The control plane is an essential element to manage the data plane communications in wired and wireless networks. In a traditional network architecture, the control plane is embedded in the hardware and it lacks programmability. Military wireless networks are historically heterogeneous in nature and require complicated manual setups to create ...
