Environmental Resource Management in Borderlands: Evolution from Competing Interests to Common Aversions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Great enthusiasm is attached to the emergence of cross-border regions (CBRs) as a new institutional arrangement for dealing with local cross-border environmental resource management and other issues that remain too distant from national capitals and/or ...

Tumor mutational burden as a determinant of metastatic dissemination patterns

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of genomic data to elucidate whether metastasis in certain organs share genetic characteristics regardless of cancer type. No robust mutational patterns were identified across different metastatic locations and cancer types.

Spaces of Synthesis: Universal Values and Regional Identity in Zlatko Ugljen’s Architecture

open access: yesProstor
Zlatko Ugljen’s architecture represents a profound engagement with the interplay between regional identity and universal architectural values. Through an analysis of his most significant works, this paper examines how Ugljen synthesizes traditional ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Giving Voice to a Building: A Critical Analysis of Adolf Loos’s Landhaus Khuner

open access: yesARENA Journal of Architectural Research, 2020
In 1930 Adolf Loos completed two buildings: the (famous, urban) Müller House in Prague and the (not famous, rural) Landhaus Khuner in Payerbach, Lower Austria, some 90 kilometres from Vienna – two designs that could not be more different in appearance ...

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Excavating Identity: The Significance of Soil Exhibitions for Understanding Place

open access: yesLand
Exhibition design, as a powerful medium of communication and interpretation, can reveal the hidden richness and regional identity embedded within the subterranean layers of soil.

Diabetes‐induced vascular calcification is associated with low pyrophosphate and its oral supplementation prevents calcification in diabetic mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Induction of diabetes in three different mouse strains uniformly resulted in an increase in TNAP activity and a reduction in pyrophosphate (PPi) in the circulation. Inhibition of TNAP restored plasma PPi. Diabetes‐induced calcification in the media layer of the aorta was detected only in the Abcc6−/− strain, which is predisposed to ectopic ...

After Regions: what next for local enterprise partnerships? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Standing out as an oddity in comparison to the convergence of policy across EU nations whereby the merits of regional apparatus – however defined – for administering development support appear to be accepted, the UK Government has abandoned England’s ...

Pathogenic Neurofibromatosis type 1 gene variants in tumors of non‐NF1 patients and role of R1276

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Somatic variants of the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) gene occur across neoplasms without clinical manifestation of the disease NF1. We identified emerging somatic pathogenic NF1 variants and hotspots, for example, at the arginine finger 1276. Those missense variants provide fundamental information about neurofibromin's role in cancer.
