Self-Organized Cooperative Criticality in Coupled Complex Systems [PDF]
We show that the coupled complex systems can evolve into a new kind of self-organized critical state where each subsystem is not critical, however, they cooperate to be critical. This criticality is different from the classical BTW criticality where the single system itself evolves into a critical state.

Hawking Radiation and $P-v$ Criticality of Charged Dynamical (Vaidya) Black Hole in Anti-de Sitter Space [PDF]
We study Hawking radiation and $P-v$ criticality of charged dynamical (Vaidya) black hole in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. By investigating the near horizon properties of scalar field, we derive Hawking temperature of dynamical charged (Vaidya) AdS black hole.

Being Critical of Criticality in the Brain [PDF]
Relatively recent work has reported that networks of neurons can produce avalanches of activity whose sizes follow a power law distribution. This suggests that these networks may be operating near a critical point, poised between a phase where activity rapidly dies out and a phase where activity is amplified over time.

Nonequilibrium Critical Phenomena [PDF]
We discuss the non-equilibrium critical phenomena in liquids, and the models for these phenomena based on local equilibrium and extended scaling assumptions. Special situations are proposed for experimental tests of the theory. Near-critical steady and transient states are reviewed.

Critical Care, Critical Data [PDF]
As big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence continue to penetrate into and transform many facets of our lives, we are witnessing the emergence of these powerful technologies within health care. The use and growth of these technologies has been contingent on the availability of reliable and usable data, a particularly robust resource in ...

Effect of spin-orbit interaction on the critical temperature of an ideal Bose gas [PDF]
We consider Bose-Einstein condensation of an ideal bose gas with an equal mixture of `Rashba' and `Dresselhaus' spin-orbit interactions and study its effect on the critical temperature. In uniform bose gas a `cusp' and a sharp drop in the critical temperature occurs due to the change in the density of states at a critical Raman coupling where the ...

Deconfined Criticality Critically Defined [PDF]
We describe characteristic physical properties of the recently introduced class of deconfined quantum critical points. Using some simple models, we highlight observables which clearly distinguish such critical points from those described by the conventional Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson framework: such a distinction can be made quite precisely even though ...

Online Meta-Critic Learning for Off-Policy Actor-Critic Methods [PDF]
Off-Policy Actor-Critic (Off-PAC) methods have proven successful in a variety of continuous control tasks. Normally, the critic's action-value function is updated using temporal-difference, and the critic in turn provides a loss for the actor that trains it to take actions with higher expected return.

Critical points of Laplace eigenfunctions on polygons [PDF]
We study the critical points of Laplace eigenfunctions on polygonal domains with a focus on the second Neumann eigenfunction. We show that if each convex quadrilaterals has no second Neumann eigenfunction with an interior critical point, then there exists a convex quadrilateral with an unstable critical point. We also show that each critical point of a
