The Influence of the Interaction between Climate and Competition on the Distributional Limits of European Shrews. [PDF]

open access: yesAnimals (Basel), 2021
It is known that species’ distributions are influenced by several ecological factors. Nonetheless, the geographical scale upon which the influence of these factors is perceived is largely undefined.

On the craniological differentiation of Crocidura leucodon and C. suaveolens of the Belorussian fauna species: occipital sutures

open access: yesNovitates Theriologicae, 2021
The shape of sutures between the parietal and occipital bones was analysed in specimens of Crocidura leucodon (n = 22) and C. suaveolens (n = 28) caught in Belarus. In all specimens of C. leucodon, the sutures form subulate invaginations of a depth of ca. 1.0–1.5 mm. Specimens of C. suaveolens do not have such invaginations.

Detection of novel orthoparamyxoviruses, orthonairoviruses and an orthohepevirus in European white-toothed shrews. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrob Genom
While the viromes and immune systems of bats and rodents have been extensively studied, comprehensive data are lacking for insectivores (order Eulipotyphla) despite their wide geographic distribution.

Borrelia spp. in small mammals in Romania [PDF]

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2019
Background Small mammals play an important role in the life-cycle of ticks and are reservoirs for several zoonotic pathogens. The aim of this study was to provide epidemiological data regarding the presence of Borrelia spp.

Assessing Surveillance of Wildlife Diseases by Determining Mammal Species Vulnerability to Climate Change

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Climate change is one of the drivers of wildlife‐borne disease emergence, as it can affect species abundance and fitness, host immunocompetence, and interactions with pathogens. To detect emerging wildlife‐borne diseases, countries may implement general wildlife‐disease surveillance systems. Such surveillance exists in the Netherlands.

Rustrela virus infection – An emerging neuropathogen of red‐necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus)

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 69, Issue 6, Page 4016-4021, November 2022., 2022
Summary The rustrela virus (RusV) was recently described as a novel pathogen in a circumscribed area of northern Germany close to the Baltic Sea. Up to now, the virus has been detected in cases of fatal non‐suppurative meningoencephalitis in zoo animals of different species and a single wild carnivore as well as in apparently healthy yellow‐necked ...

Theriological collections and aspects of morphological diagnostics of white-toothed shrews, genus Crocidura [PDF]

open access: yesПраці Теріологічної школи, 2012
Aspects of morphological diagnostics of two white-toothed shrews Crocidura are analysed here. C. leucodon and C. suaveolens differ from each other in the main characteristics of external appearance, coloration and linear measurements.
