An Integrated Approach to Determining the Risk of Overexploitation for Data-Poor Pelagic Atlantic Sharks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Assesses the risk of over-exploitation of sharks in Atlantic longline fisheries using three metrics based on multivariate statistics as a way to make management recommendations for species with limited data.

Emergence of Ophidiomyces ophidiicola, Nannizziopsis barbatae and Paranannizziopsis in free‐ranging Australian reptiles

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Emerging fungal diseases pose a threat to reptiles globally. Increasing detections of onygenalean fungi, particularly Ophidiomyces ophidiicola, Nannizziopsis spp. and Paranannizziopsis spp. in clinically diseased free‐ranging reptiles, indicate likely ongoing spread within wild reptile populations.

First molecular detection and genetic diversity of Hepatozoon sp. (Apicomplexa) and Brugia sp. (Nematoda) in a crocodile monitor in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand

open access: yesScientific Reports
The crocodile monitor (Varanus salvator) is the most common monitor lizard in Thailand. Based on habitat and food, they have the potential to transmit zoonoses, with a high possibility of infecting ectoparasites and endoparasites.

Management, conservation and farming of saltwater crocodiles: An Australian case study of sustainable commercial use [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Opinions differ about what types of policies are likely to be most effective in conserving wildlife species. For example, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) is based on the premise that curbing the

Computing Skinning Weights via Convex Duality

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
We present an alternate optimization method to compute bounded biharmonic skinning weights. Our method relies on a dual formulation, which can be optimized with a nonnegative linear least squares setup. Abstract We study the problem of optimising for skinning weights through the lens of convex duality.

Informing spatial conservation prioritization with species’ traits

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract New Guinea, the most botanically diverse island on the planet, is the location for one of the boldest conservation initiatives. The Manokwari Declaration aims to achieve 70% conservation designation for the Bird's Head Peninsula. This is 40% higher than the 2022 Global Biodiversity Framework target.

Effects of Audible Human Disturbances on Koala (Phascolarctos Cinereus) Behavior in Queensland, Australia and Implications for Management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Koala populations are declining, and a contributing factor is stress, which can lead to greater susceptibility to disease. Koalas need about twenty hours of rest daily to remain healthy and unstressed.

Island‐restricted reptiles are more threatened but less studied than their mainland counterparts

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Reptiles are highly diverse on islands, yet there is no comprehensive overview of island‐restricted reptiles (IRRs) regarding their distribution, threat status, and research efforts. Our assessment revealed that despite IRRs comprising nearly a quarter of global reptile species and 30.8% being threatened, only 7.2% of the literature focuses on them ...

Importance of context‐specific community perspectives in human–wildlife coexistence: Evidence from Chitwan National Park, Nepal

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
This study examines community priorities for human–wildlife coexistence strategies across four administrative sectors of Chitwan National Park, Nepal, revealing marked differences among sectors. Results show that local communities in different sectors have distinct needs and expectations, indicating that uniform approaches are insufficient and that ...
