The oldest occurrence of Crocodylus in Madagascar and the Holocene crocodylian turnover

open access: yes, 2022
The island of Madagascar is home to a distinctive fauna and flora whose biogeographic history is not fully understood. Today’s crocodylian population consists of a single species, the Nile crocodile, Crocodylus niloticus, whose colonization of the island

Pleistocene large reptile tracks and probable swim traces on South Africa’s Cape south coast

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Science, 2020
The Cape south coast of South Africa contains a wealth of Pleistocene vertebrate trace fossil sites in aeolianites and cemented foreshore deposits. Published studies have described mammal and avian tracksites identified along this coastline.

Illegal trade of crocodylians in Colombia: Spatiotemporal dynamics and implications on conservation efforts

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice
Crocodylian conservation efforts have encountered significant obstacles from species overhunting to negative local perception. While conservation strategies such as sustainable use have helped the recovery of several crocodylian species around the world,

Layer‐by‐layer soft‐tissue effects on flexion–extension‐dominant passive ex vivo limb joint ROM in quadrupedal mammals: An anatomical contribution to a morphofunctional framework

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Layer‐by‐layer passive ex vivo assessment of flexion–extension‐dominant limb joint ROM across rabbit, pudu deer, chilla fox and pig revealed joint‐, tissue‐ and taxon‐specific responses to progressive tissue removal. Proximal joints often showed increasing ROM, whereas distal joints often showed non‐monotonic responses.

Reconstructing the major skull myology of the giant stem‐amphibian Mastodonsaurus: A case study for early tetrapods

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
We reconstruct the major cranial musculature of the giant stem amphibian Mastodonsaurus giganteus, revealing a differentiated jaw‐adductor system, a probable sesamoid pulley, and previously unrecognised muscles. This EPB‐based case study establishes an anatomical framework for modelling feeding in early tetrapods and supports interpretations of ...

A New 13 Million Year Old Gavialoid Crocodylian from Proto-Amazonian Mega-Wetlands Reveals Parallel Evolutionary Trends in Skull Shape Linked to Longirostry. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Gavialoid crocodylians are the archetypal longirostrine archosaurs and, as such, understanding their patterns of evolution is fundamental to recognizing cranial rearrangements and reconstructing adaptive pathways associated with elongation of the rostrum

Osteological correlates of the respiratory and vascular systems in the neural canals of Mesozoic ornithurines Ichthyornis and Janavis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 10, Page 2725-2738, October 2026.
Abstract In birds, the neural canal houses a variety of anatomical structures including the spinal cord, meninges, spinal vasculature, and respiratory diverticula. Among these, paramedullary diverticula and the extradural dorsal spinal vein may leave behind osteological correlates in the form of pneumatic foramina and fossae, and a bilobed geometry of ...

A detailed redescription of a skeletally immature ‘Redondasaurus’ suggests ontogenetic transformations in the taxon mirror phytosaurian morphological evolution

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 10, Page 2656-2697, October 2026.
Abstract The study of morphological evolution is fundamentally tied to ontogeny, yet studies of these heterochronic processes in the fossil record are rare. Fossils belonging to an ontogenetic series are difficult to assign to an ontogenetic stage due to inconsistent proxies for skeletal ages, challenging to taxonomically assign due to morphological ...
